Annoying Keychain Species in When the Curtain has fallen | World Anvil

Annoying Keychain

There is no human that has managed to avoid the 'malice of inanimate objects'. Losing keys, things breaking down as soon as they are needed, printers, searching for something in a drawer for the tenth time only for it to be found by someone else the first time. There is a species of Spirits that harvests human annoyance by causing all those things.   Annoying keychains are Spirits of mischief and annoyance which formed in the areas where technology and mechanisms are prevalent.

Appearance

As their name suggests, when Annoying keychains manifest, they take on the form of keychains resembling various things, made out either of mechanical or electronic components. Their appearance and size are mostly based on or related to the things popular in the areas they were in before. Unless one uses some device capable of detecting spiritual energy, it is completely impossible to distinguish this spirit from normal objects. When annoying keychains find someone to feed on, they'll attach themselves to one of their possessions.

Powers

Altering the perception

"You don't have to search for it there, I've looked there five times already... What do you mean it's there?"
Annoying keychains possess the ability to make objects disappear from one's perception. This power can affect only the holder of the spirit so anyone else still can see the object normally. What's more, the only way the holder can notice the object again is either for it to be found by someone else or by spending literal hours looking for it and giving up. Only then, the object will appear.

Object manipulation

"Why does it have to stop working whenever I want to use it?"
Another property of the Annoying keychains is to affect physical objects in various ways to either break something or lose something. While not really powerful to cause some big damage to larger structures, this ability is strong enough to teleport something up to the size of a book a few meters away, cause electrical malfunction, cause glitches in software, or cause damage to some smaller components of mechanical objects.
Other names:
Take that damn thing off of me!
Reproduction:
Spirits do not reproduce.
Taboo:
To permanently destroy Annoying keychains, one needs to 'open' them. The mechanisms and electronics that make up their bodies form a very hard-to-solve, multilayered puzzle. One who manages to 'crack' it while dealing with the powers of the spirit affecting their tools will kill the Spirit, leaving their corpse, now an ordinary challenging puzzle, behind.

Getting rid of them

As soon as they attach themselves to someone, Annoying keychains use their ability to alter one's perception on themselves. As such, to get rid of one of them, the victim needs help from another person. Any other tries to find the culprit of the misery will be always futile.

Personality

Only a few older and stronger Annoying keychains manage to gain the ability to speak. Once they do, most of them turn out to be childish tricksters, finding joy in annoying everyone else. They might even start taunting someone while staying invisible to them just to piss them off a little bit more.

If you manage to get enough 'food' for them, then probably yes.
