The Mirror Moors

Ain't yer got a Gnome to go to?

It is not known when the first Gnome responded to this jibe by claiming to come from 'The Mirror Moors'. But what we can confirm is that since then almost every Gnome encountered claims to come from this same mythical place, or at least every so-called 'Imperial Gnome'.   It is obviously difficult to be certain whether mortals have ever encountered every Gnome or even every species of Gnomes, and certainly, the stories of Lechecauns from Albion suggest that they live at the end of rainbows, or in underground caves disguised as rabbit holes.   The idea of living at the end of a rainbow might seem far-fetched but claiming that is probably just as plausible in practical terms as claiming to live in 'The Mirror Moors' when you are standing in a tavern in Nuln over one hundred leagues away from its assumed location.

So, where are The Mirror Moors?

The glib answer would be 'Gnomebody Knows'. The Mirror Moors certainly do not appear on any current map of the Empire or the known world.   However, an ancient map of the Electoral State of Middenland hand-drawn by the famous cartographer and academic Professor Alfred Nuñez a.k.a 'Mad Alfred' shows an area of moorland of approximately one hundred square miles clearly labelled 'Mirror Moors.

If only it was that simple.

The area depicted on Mad Alfred's map certainly exists. In fact, on modern maps the area is called 'The Midden Moors' , and with good reason. It truth the Midden Moors are a wasteland of barren hills, stagnant ponds, bogs and knarled and twisted tree's. They are said to be the lair of numerous mythical beasts and spirits and one could literally lose an army trying to search them for Gnomes and their treasure. Indeed some people have.

However, according to the Gnomes, the Mirror Moor is a magical place described as being a paradise of emerald hills, sparkling crystal lakes and swathes of brightly coloured flowers. Indeed the descriptions seem to become more and more fanciful in the telling and further and further from reality.
