The Backshee

Once a boatwright's workshop, the Yarn Backshee sits beside the River Armont at a quiet spot, some two kilometres downstream from the main pier and the town centre.

Purpose / Function

The old boatwrights workshop, alongside the cottage that came with the job, were previously kept busy mainly by supply boats travelling upriver from Duntown towards the fortress at Marches and the town of Livey. Owing to the high price of land along the river at Duntown, Yarn's boatwright could offer a cheaper service for repairs and maintenance. As times changed and the river became a way for goods to come more often downstream than upstream, the boatwright's workshop became less and less used, and eventually was deserted for smaller docking facilities in the town centre.

Alterations

Around the year 680, Anna Mirfast came ashore from over the Collyner Mountains at Yarn and took possession of the old buildings. On exploring the old workshop, she was delighted to find that the local noble family, the Adderleys, had used the building as a dumping ground for many old and interesting books, nick-nacks, trinkets and curiosities. 'Backshee' was the name the family gave to this treasure-trove of apparently useless items.   Over the last 70 or so years, Anna has continuously worked in the Backshee to attempt to order the 'collection' into a museum, or at least into a set of vague categories. The problem is that Anna's idea of organisation is not static nor immutable, and she dislikes being held to the decisions she made yesterday. As a result, the visitor may find a visit to the Backshee more confusing than enlightening.

Tourism

The Backshee, perhaps because it is a little out of town, gets few visitors. The Trapadvisor Guide to Weslo does recommend it to visitors, but mostly because of Anna's famous elven tea and scones.
