Marches

Marches is a village across the banks of the Armont. It's the site of a former river fortress, three days' march from Duntown. The village is split between those who farm sheep and those who farm cattle, on the right and left banks of the river respectively.   Nowadays, Marches is primarily known for the quantity and quality of the meat it produces.

History

Old records indicate that the settlement was originally called Three Marches, or at least the fortress on the river was called Three Marches. Eventually a number of houses and businesses grew up beside the river fortress, with farmers looking to supply meat to the garrison. This tradition of meat production continues to this day.   The river fort is not deserted, but it fulfils no strategic military purpose. Instead it is a meeting-place for the rival lamb and beef producers and the site of the Big Market, an annual festival. It's also traditionally the place for visitors to the town to stay, lest they appear to show more favour for one side of the river over the other. A historical failure to do so led to The Stramash of Marches.

Tourism

West of the river were the sheep farmers, while cattle farmers settled on the east. As time went on, a rivalry sprouted between them, and there is some silent antagonism between the parties. This is put off once a year for the festivities of the Big Market, a three-day event where the whole village comes together in celebration. Outsiders are not encouraged to attend the Big Market.
