Neuk

A small fishing village east of the Armont. Previously the port of Hollymargret, it now has some luxury cliffside mansions.

History

Neuk was once the harbour area of Hollymargret, and was originally built as an orcish settlement. The orcs of Westlo were once a seafaring people and hunted whales, among other things, from this port. In time, as is recorded in the annals of Hollymargret, the small settlement became attached to Hollymargret and served as a harbour for visiting merchant ships as well as the centre of the fishing industry. After the destruction of Hollymargret, Neuk was deserted by both orcs and elves, but much of the infrastructure of the village was not damaged. As a result, when future generations of humanfolk investigated the settlement, they found it ripe for resettlement.   Because of this preexisting building work and the tranquil setting of Neuk, two kinds of human settler arrived. The first were fishermen, and these often were recent immigrants without land or property in the region, and tended to be lower class. The fishermen moved into the distinctive orchish seaside cottages, round, single-roomed buildings with flat roofs and a central chimney.    Attracted by the warm and bright summers of the south east, the other settlers were rich humans from Duntown who wanted a holiday or retirement property. Cliffside mansions were built and some of the larger orcish homes were bought and connected up to make sprawling multi-room complexes.   The The Porcaro Family is known to have lived in Neuk for around 200 years, and have provided at least the last 12 Constables of the town.

Tourism

Neuk is a very expensive place to visit. This is chiefly because there is a lack of affordable places to stay, and not due to cost of living in the town. In fact, one can eat very well very cheaply, if one likes seafood.   The stratification of society in Neuk means that there are only the families of fishermen - who have no desire to leave their idyll - and the rich owners of impressive houses, for whom the convenience outweighs financial gain. The result is that practically no property in Neuk is for sale or unused, and what guest houses exist are astronomically expensive.   Wealthy folk who do take the summer in Neuk tend to invite guests, however, and these guests may enjoy fine wine and seafood, water-based sports and touring the ruins of Hollymargret.
