Witch and the Peasant Boy Myth in Westerheim | World Anvil

Witch and the Peasant Boy

Long ago, a young peasant boy came across an old woman in the woods who had broken her ankle. He stopped to help her and she revealed herself to be a powerful witch. She granted him a boon to charm the King's daughter. They married and lived happily ever after.

Historical Basis

In the time of Queen Ashton Hadleigh, Lucas Greenknight came across an injured blood mage named Gaiane. He helped her and took care of her. When she was well, she granted him a glamour which would cause the daughter of the King, Princess Ashton, to fall in love with him. Lucas went to the palace and Ashton did fall in love with him, insisting to her father, King Grayson Hadleigh that she would marry no other but the poor man. Lucas joined the princess's personal court as her intended, then proved himself worthy of a knighthood over the course of the following five years. Before his death, King Grayson knighted Lucas, named him Greenknight and blessed his marriage to the Crown Princess.   After Queen Aston's coronation, several of her courtiers sought out the witch Gaiane and killed her, bringing her head to the queen as evidence of magic tainting the royal bloodline. Ashton's reign was shadowed for centuries afterward and several coup attempts were waged over her descendants' legitimacy.
