Divided into seven chapters and an appendix:
  1. The Pikaen Islands - contains detailed, hand-drawn maps of the southern Pikae Islands. Marks the location of dozens of known sea caves, as well as the entrances to eighteen previously unknown cave systems.
  2. In the Caves - Scott sets down his experiences sailing on a shipping vessel out of Kiwo, the Grand Star.
  3. Shelter From Disaster - After a terrible storm in 625, the Grand Star crashed on the shoals near Pikaen and went down with all hands, save Scott himself. He escaped the shipwreck by swimming into the entrance of a previously unknown sea cave. While living in this cave, he claims to have met several merfolk who brought him food and helped him survive.
  4. Understanding - Scott claims the merfolk used magic to allow him to breathe underwater and brought him to their civilization constructed of coral and rock, connected to the sea caves and thriving in the absence of human contact. They taught him their language and allowed him to live with them.
  5. Cultural Exchange - This chapter contains numerous observations and descriptions from Scott's three years living among the merfolk. It details their cultural laws and ceremonies, building methods, domestication of sea life, and farming.
  6. Fishing Techniques - Scott details the extensive hunting/fishing parties which go out in search of what he refers to as "big game," the massive pod fish which dwell in deeper waters to the south of Pikae. He explains how the merfolk organize themselves and carry out hunts to return to their homes with food and raw materials which last for months after.
  7. Expulsion - Scott claims he was expelled from the merfolks' good graces when some of the men decided he was distracting their women from in-tribe relationships. They revoked his ability to breathe underwater and abandoned him deep in the coves outside of Kiwo. Only his good luck and years of swimming strength allowed him to survive.
Appendix: The Language - serves as the basis for the Nushanga language description.
