The Gifted
Every generation has it's elite, the best of the best. Sometimes born into it, otherwise earned through merit or circumstance. There are even rare cases of it being genetic. But whether by birthright or personal effort the ones who stand above the rest are referred to as The Gifted.
Summary
To be one of The Gifted is more than just being the best. It is to be recognized by the world itself as worthy of power. You might be the best one on one duelist, or the person who has.... has the highest body count. Regardless if you are the best baker, taylor, or blacksmith once the power of the gifted washes over you, you become a force to be reckoned with. That said this exists for every profession, even those less savory. And no matter what, as long as a profession exists The Gifted for that profession exists, somewhere.
Historical Basis
The first Gifted was widely agreed to be Charad the gifted author. Even now some of his books are in perfect shape and best sellers. his more powerful works include Charad's tome of everything that ever was.
Another example would be the Hider and the Seeker bloodlines. Two gifted families at odds that have been documented through the ages either trying to avoid or catch one another respectively. Although this ends in bloodshed more than often.

Variations & Mutation
The only notable variation is one that the church of Almada has that attributes being one of the gifted as a prelude to godhood.
Cultural Reception
This legend exists in almost all cultures, either attributing it to deities or claiming that it is the strength of the individual in most cases.
In Literature
These are often depicted as great heroes or terrible villains. But often nobody knows except the person with the power.
