Equivalent compensation law
The only human law to ever make it to the international stage, as most are too extreme and oddly specific.
The basics of this law is that crime must be proven beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law that is internationally recognized. And that the punishment must not be more extreme than the crime. Accounting for the local culture it does not specify what is considered a crime or if punishment is proper or improper. Making it clear that when in Rome you must do as the Romans.
This law does cover prolonged imprisonment, forced labor, conditions of prisoners, and the death penalty.
Imprisonment: The time a person may be imprisoned cannot exceed 1/2 of their expected lifespan.
Forced labor: The time a person may be forced to work cannot exceed 1/8 of their expected lifespan.
Condition of prisoners: The conditions any prisoner is subject to cannot be worse than the minimum living standard of a citizen in the country detained in.
Death Penalty: The death penalty may only be ordered if all other forms of punishment are considered inadequate. The method is not covered.
Only races that are under the Charter of sentient Races are covered under this law.
Purpose
This ensures that outrageous charges will not be heaped on an individual.
