History
The author needed money and took a gig by his publisher to write a supernatural melodramatic tragedy. The author decided to write a series of interconnected melodramas and tragedies connected by a fictional (and inaccurate by the 21st century standards) ghost story that involved an Arabic zombie. A horror movie was based on this book.
Public Reaction
It received decent reviews and seen as a decent drama in its time. By the 21st century it's considered an outdated and cliched book.

There was a movie made based on this book. It was a horror tragedy based on the ghost story.
