The State of the Pantheon Myth in Wartorn | World Anvil

The State of the Pantheon

The Great Purge left the material world in a sorry state but it also caused unprecedented damage to the divine sphere. Many gods were destroyed outright by the energies that broke the world. Chief among them was of course Kanlyn, the goddess of magic, but many others were struck down too or otherwise affected.

Boros, the god of war, was stripped of most of his power by the devastation. By other accounts, he was completely burned out but in any case he was never heard from again. Carantoon, the god of nature, was driven into a cataleptic state by the utter destruction inflicted on the the land. Nerion, the sea god, was split into two new deities. And this is but a small sample of the disturbance the pantheon suffered.

All this upheaval created many gaping holes in the ranks of the gods and left the pantheon in disarray. In time new deities begun to ascend but the situation calmed down only on the surface. Now, with the world finally stabilized, the mortals have adapted to the new norm. But most of the deities are still very young by divine standards and wholly inexperienced in godly affairs. The old gods that survived are more knowledgeable but also mostly diminished and traumatized. The stage is set for immature, myopic behavior and petty feuds on the part of the divines. At the same time though the power vaccuum is large and ripe for exploitation by mortals with the wherewithal to meddle in matters of ascention.
