The Standing Web

The Great Wizards that survived the Purge have created a work of astonishing skill and power. The Standing Web as it known, is a net or blanket, if you will, of magical energy that has been placed over the whole world. This web provides spellcasters with several benefits, such as being able to detect magic at will. Here is how it works: Essentially the Web is very much like a normal cobweb, only attuned to magical energies. Thus any concentration of magic has an impact on the Web that anyone who knows how can sense, if they pay close enough attention. This means that any wizard can tap into the Web and possibly be able to sense any spell being cast at the moment, or locate any other wizard. The range of detection depends mainly on the strength of the user and the power of the the target. Other uses are also possible for the creative user like communication between proficient users, scrying or using the Web to fuel casting. These and other similar "advanced" applications of the Standing Web are usually not taught to apprentices, but rather left for them to discover on their own as a test of their understanding of the inner workings of magic and their creativity.
