Imperial Colleges of Magic
Each college has the following structure in ascending order of importance :
Aspirant
Initiate
Both are not part of the colleges of magic. Through trial or study and their affinity for the winds of magic they will follow the initiation path specific to each college. Skilled wizards and sorcerers can bypass this learning step under the agreement of a higher ranked magister that will vouch for them.
Magisters constitue the bulk of the wizards of each college. They dedicate their time to research and war, the proportion of which depends on the considered order. They command aspirants and initiates that carry the mundane tasks of their work.
Alongside their standard tasks, higher ranked Magister supervises the recruitment process of new aspirants going through individual cases that show promise. They are highly regarded for their knowledge of the arcane or ability on the battlefield. Few individuals get access to this rank that also confers high authority within the imperial army.
Only 2 of them can have this status at the same time. The Arch Magister of Knowledge and the Arch Magister of War. They represent the best of the magisters in the college each dedicating their time to their respective field of expertise and excelling at it. They have high command in the colleges and the army and are elected by the leader of the college and the previous Arch Magisters. Only individuals of exceptional skill access this prestigious position within the colleges of magic. All decisions within one college go through them and they have every right to oppose any decision.
They represent the pinnacle of achievement for a caster in the Empire and Colleges of Magic. These individuals have no equal in their domain and have attained mastery of their respective aspect and expertise. They embody the ideal of each college and have total authority within it. In the army they stand alongside the Reiksmarshal, Huntsmarshal and most importantly, the Emperor Himself. They can sway decisions that will affect millions of people, influence the course of wars and intervene within the highest political spheres.
Once each 8 years, all the Patriarchs and Matriarchs gather in the Conclave of Mages in Altdorf to determine who will earn the title of Supreme ruler of the colleges. this is usually done through combat or arcane duels.
Their decision is absolute and can only be disputed by the Emperor or a full assembly of Patriarchs. The Supreme Patriarch sits to the left of the Emperor and is one of his closest counselors, able to start and end wars with a single word. They are the highest authority in magic in the whole Empire and bear the legendary Staff of Volans, given by Teclis to humans, as an insignia.
Regulate and control the people of the Empire with magical sensitivity, protecting them from Chaos and from themselves.
Each College has its own infrastructure ,chain of provisions, money and resources. They have their capital buildings in the city of Altdorf but each college might have antennas in different cities to suit their specific needs.
