Underground Ratfolk
Living under the cities of the world
Underground Ratfolk are ratfolk who have taken to living in and under cities instead of out in the hills. Deep tunnels under villages, the sewers of a town, or a district in a capital, might hold an underground ratfolk city or community. Unliked by many, they are seen as scavengers or vermin to the higher classes.
Naming Traditions
Unisex names
Examples: Pot, Petal, Tin, Copper, Pin
Family names
Underground Ratfolk name themselves after objects and items instead of taking on conventional names. Their last names they take on after the city they lived or grew up in. There is no real need for last names in the cities, because leaving their home is especially rare.
Culture
Major language groups and dialects
Ratfolk primarily speak Common, but some have a knack for Undercommon as well, though this is rarer. It all depends on which city and the population they grow up around. If they for example live in an area where Dragonborns are especially common, they might pick up a few word of draconian.
Culture and cultural heritage
Underground Ratfolk are seen by many in big cities as infesting vermin, thieves or scavengers. They are disliked by many, though this view is slowly starting to fade into more of a neutral sceptism.
Shared customary codes and values
Underground Ratfolk are gatherers, building their cities with whatever they find, and eating and cooking food that they have gathered either in or around the city and land above.
They are very shy to the other races, and seeing an Underground Ratfolk on the street is not very common in most parts. Many inhabitants of cities know about their existance below, but few have seen one.
Art & Architecture
Ratfolk architecture in itself is interesting because of the ability to form any found item into something that matches the rest of the buildings. Created in the sewers below cities, or caves or burrows just on the outskirts of towns, these underground cities are only large enough for the Ratfolk themselves to move around in. Visitors of other races are rare and few between.
