Gravelmiota Mountain Range (Gravel-my-oat-a)

"A place where you go to die a long frozen death" A saying about the mountains.

Written by Deathshot

A vast mountain range covered in you guessed it, gravel. The mountains have three peaks, and The mountains stretch some 260 miles, and is 30 miles wide. The tallest peak is 24,934 feet tall. The shortest peak is 14,076 feet tall. The final peak is 19,739 feet tall. There are also several long mountain ranges that make up the majority of the mountain range. Snow reaches the mountains and covers the mountains around 10,000 feet tall and higher. Their are few paths through the mountains and they are treacherous as goblins and crude ice men attack any travelers they see. But the mountains do provide resources to any brave enough to face the dangers of its inhabitants and the snow storms that frequent the heights. The mountains have many caves rich in ore deposits. Containing iron, zinc, and sylv (sill-v). The king occasionally sends an elite squad of soldiers and mages to collect materials but does so sparingly. Along with ores there are plentiful trees and gravel, which can be sifted to find flint for grinding grain and mass-producing arrowheads.

Geography

A long mountain range with varying heights. There are plentiful supplies in the harsh environment and many animals. Most of which are hostile and predators. It acts as a natural border between Tolondrigna and the neighboring country of Parash. The ice and snow melt provides the source to several rivers and streams.

Ecosystem

The few creatures that live here are extremely durable and have adapted to the freezing winters and sweltering summers. The inhabitants dig burrows and most hibernate through the winter while hiding in the shade during the summer.

Ecosystem Cycles

In the spring the snow begins to melt and most streams and rivers flow higher because of the snowmelt. The best time of year animals and the few intelligent inhabitants appear to gather resources for the rest of the year.
In summer trees some sparse grasses grow more and what little dirt there is thaws and becomes hard and dry in the extreme heat.
In Fall the mountains become cold, light snow may fall.
In the winter the mountains are full of blizzards and snow storms. The snow reaching up to 15 feet deep.

Climate

The winters are extremely cold, reaching -80 degrees Fahrenheit (-62 degrees Celsius) and up to 137 degrees Fahrenheit (58 degrees celsius) in the summers.
Snow storms in the winter time are more ferocious than anywhere else on Volatia.

Fauna & Flora

Animals that Live Here
Polar Bears,
Wolves with extremely thick coats,
Foxes with pelts thicker than they appear (believed to be a magical mutation),
Snow Hares twice the size of normal hares (believed to be a magical mutation),
Reindeer.
Plants that Live Here
Pine and other coniferous trees,
Sparse but hardy grasses and weeds

Natural Resources

There is lots of various wood to be found in the forests.
Plentiful water due to snow melt.

History

Not much is known to happen here because few explore it and return sane. But from the few records, the mountains are and have been hostile to almost all since as far back as 100 AD, which is the oldest known record of someone's adventures into the mountains. The few who live there are the Ice Men and they wear bear hide coats and live in caves of ice to survive, they are extremely hostile, as are the goblins who live there.

Tourism

Nobody just visits this place, unless they are crazy.
The only people who have gone there are foolhardy scientists and explorers. As well as the elite groups sent by the king to gather resources in times of need.
These people bring intense winter survival supplies including thick fur coats and clothing and magically heated tents.
These mountains are more dangerous than a battlefield, they kill any unprepared, and that is most who enter there range. It takes the thickest gear magically protected to survive even for a little here. TURN BACK NOW
An excerpt from the journal of adventurer Tyler Roherm who went into the mountains:
Those mountains are deadly, I stayed a week with the kings elite group who were gathering resourses when the mines to the east had collapsed for a while. I was given the thickest clothing, all magically enchanted to draw heat from fires built specifically for this trip. Even then, in the layers of clothing, and even in the tents I still felt the biting cold. Two men died that trip not to the Ice Men, whom we did encounter, nor the goblin creatures whom we thankfully avoided. But we lost them to the cold. It cares not be ye young or old, sick or healthy. They were both healthy strong young men and they died in the frost. We couldn't even bury their bodies as the holes filled as soon as they were dug, and the ground was incredibly hard. So we wrapped them in canvas cloths and set them on the cround in a cave and had a wizard seal it off. The best we could do.
