Shimmercorn

Shimmercorn is an ethereal plant that grows within the regions of the Forest of Dasev. A colorful plant, shimmercorn is known for its concentrated ether deposits within its sweet kernels, for which the crop is prized.
A rare crop because of where it can grow, shimmercorn is one of the plants that forms the backbone of Mithambe's alchemical and drug production. As such, it is highly protected, and regularly fetches high prices when sold in places like the Evernight Market, for which it is a rare reagent material that the most discerning can find novel uses for.

Growth Rate & Stages

Shimmercorn takes approximately 30-40 days from sowing to harvest. Shimmercorn will follow a similar growth pattern to regular corn.

Ecology and Habitats

Shimmercorn has only taken to the abnormally charged ether of the Forest of Dasev. Shimmercorn seems to absorb and concentrate the components of the ether witihn its kernels, granting the corn its arcane significance.

Biological Cycle

Shimmercorn kernels will take longer to emerge when the soil temperature is cooler. When the winter months approach, shimmercorn kernels that have not emerged yet will enter a stage of hibernation until the soil temperature is warm enough to sustain healthy growth.

Uses, Products & Exploitation

The ears of shimmercorn are valued as concentrated reagents for alchemy, as they are able to concentrate the ether around them during their growth and maturation. Ears of shimmercorn can be consumed by others to bolster their ethereal reserves, although this practice is frowned upon - it is easy for one to slip up and accidentally inflict hyperetheria on themselves through over-indulgence in the sweet kernels.
The distilled essence of shimmercorn kernels form the alchemical basis of the drug itirnel, a first-line mana agonist.
Shimmercorn silk is often utilized in the creation of warded ropes, and has also seen usage in forming the cores of wands and other "simple" arcane devices. Silk that is used for such purposes is first treated with a preservative.

Geographic Origin and Distribution

So far, shimmercorn has been limited to the depths of the Forest of Dasev, possibly being one of the many examples of flora being warped by Marhas Dasev's Grand Working. Attempts to plant shimmercorn kernels elsewhere, even in ethereally similar environments, have been met with failure.

Conservation Status

Due to their limited range, shimmercorn is regarded as an endangered species, and strict conservation and export regulations are in place to protect this sensitive crop.

Average Height

Fully grown shimmercorn stalks can grow as tall at 2.5 meters, though they tend to average between 1.3 and 2.1 meters in height at maturity.
