Keepers & Dalish Clans

The Clans -

The Dalish society is organized into five distinct clans, each playing a unique role within their culture. These clans are further divided into three greater clans and two lesser clans, each led by a Keeper who assumes responsibility for the well-being and guidance of their respective clan members. Due to their extended lifespans, keepers possess a wealth of knowledge and experience, making them the primary source of wisdom and leadership within their communities. The three greater clans, Ralaferin, Minrthalin, and Vernehn, each have specific focuses and priorities. Ralaferin, known as the Clan of the Hunt, maintains and passes down the ancestral knowledge of hunting and combat styles. Minrthalin, the Clan of the Future, embraces change and innovation, using their past as a foundation to shape a brighter future for the Dalish. Vernehn, the Clan of the Past, reveres their heritage and tirelessly guards ancient elven ruins.   In contrast, the lesser clans, Lavellan and Hawlen, offer unique contributions. Lavellan, the Clan of the Spirit, places great importance on their deities and religious beliefs, occasionally engaging with other communities. Hawlen, known as the Clan of the Craft, are accomplished traders and craftsmen, bringing goods from distant places and infusing variety into the clan's way of life.

Ralaferin - Clan of the Hunt

The Ralaferin clan, known as the Clan of the Hunt, stands as one of the more traditional among the Dalish clans. Their primary focus centers on preserving the time-honoured knowledge and skills passed down by their ancestors, particularly in the domains of combat and hunting. This commitment to tradition sets them apart within the Dalish society.   What distinguishes the Ralaferin clan from the others is their somewhat unusual penchant for aggression, especially when compared to the generally peaceful disposition of the Dalish people. Reports and rumors abound of skirmishes and conflicts involving Ralaferin members and various factions outside their clan. However, what truly perplexes outsiders is that these confrontations rarely result in fatalities on either side. This unique feature has garnered both intrigue and confusion among those who encounter the Ralaferin, sparking questions about their motives and the deeper meaning behind their actions within the world of Vilra-Shal.

Minrthalin - Clan of the Future

The Dalish clan of Minrthalin, known as the Clan of the Future, distinguishes itself through its unique and somewhat peculiar approach to their heritage. Despite their unwavering commitment to the teachings and traditions of their ancestors, the Minrthalin Dalish have a particular focus on the future. They utilize the knowledge and wisdom passed down through the generations not merely as a means of preserving history but as a guide to navigate the uncertain path that lies ahead for the Elves of Vilra-Shal.   Intriguingly, the Minrthalin clan views the past as a powerful tool for shaping their future. Drawing upon their forebears' experiences and wisdom, they seek to forge a path that honors their heritage while also adapting to the evolving world around them. This unique perspective has earned them a reputation as forward-thinkers among the Dalish, as they continuously strive to balance tradition and innovation, all in the name of securing a prosperous and harmonious future for their people.

Vernehn - Clan of the Past

The Vernehn clan, known as the Clan of the Past, stands out among the Dalish for their deep reverence and dedication to their rich history. They are known to hold their ancestral legacy very close to their hearts and have a solid attachment to the ancient elven ruins scattered throughout Vilra-Shal. In fact, they are often found in these forgotten and sacred places, acting as fervent protectors and custodians of their heritage.   One of the most striking features of the Vernehn clan is their passionate worship of the old elven Gods, a tradition they share with the Lavellan clan. This shared spiritual connection creates a strong bond between the two clans and reinforces their collective commitment to preserving the cultural and religious practices of their ancestors. To outsiders, the Vernehn clan might appear as staunch traditionalists, but their unwavering dedication to their past is a testament to their deep respect for the wisdom and traditions of their forefathers.

Lavellan - Clan of the Spirit

The Lavellan clan, often mistaken for a religious cult due to their unwavering devotion to their deities, stands out as a unique and enigmatic group among the Dalish. Their deep reverence for their Gods sets them apart, earning them the label of religious zealots from other clans. Within their own community, these deities hold a central place in their lives, guiding their actions and decisions.   While they may not engage openly with outsiders or other communities, the Lavellan clan maintains regular contact with the Vernehn clan, who share their reverence for the old elven Gods. This mutual respect strengthens their bond and provides a platform for preserving their religious traditions and ancient beliefs.   Additionally, rumors persist that the Lavellan clan goes to great lengths to ensure the survival of their faith. Some claim that they strategically place members of their clan in elven alienages within other settlements, potentially to spread their religious influence or safeguard their traditions beyond their own clan's borders. These secretive practices only add to the air of mystery surrounding the Lavellan clan and their unwavering commitment to their deities.

Hawlen - Clan of the Craft

The Hawlen clan, known as the Clan of the Craft, stands out as a remarkable group among the Dalish. Renowned for their exceptional craftsmanship, they have harnessed their skills to become a thriving trader clan. Unlike other Dalish clans that primarily use their own crafted gear, the members of Hawlen are a vibrant and colourful presence in the world of trade.   As skilled artisans and traders, the Hawlen clan travelled from one settlement to another, offering finely made goods for sale or trade. Walking through their bustling caravan feels akin to strolling through a bustling port market, with bright and vividly coloured tents and a dazzling array of items from every corner of Vilra-Shal. This unique approach to their craft has set them apart from other clans, making them one of the more settled Dalish communities as they establish a semi-permanent presence in a single forest. Nonetheless, they continue to send out smaller trading caravans to share their wares and expertise with others, embodying the spirit of commerce and cultural exchange.

Revasan Arlthran -

Every 15 years, the Dalish clans converge in a momentous ceremonial gathering known as the "Revasan Arlthran," which roughly translates to "Freedom of the Free Peoples." This event holds profound significance within the Dalish culture, serving as a vital forum for the discussion of current affairs and the strategic planning of the Dalish people's future.   These gatherings are a testament to the commitment of the clans to maintain unity and preserve their rich heritage in the face of a constantly evolving world. The "Revasan Arlthran" of the Dalish clans takes place in the Elvenbirth Glade deep within the Sunderfels, a sacred forest where an ancient Birthstone marks the spot where elves are believed to have first awakened in the world. Encircled by towering trees, the glade features a crystal-clear river, exotic blossoms, and a strong spiritual presence, making it a place of profound significance and unity for the clans.

The Keepers -

The Keepers are revered leaders within the Dalish society, each holding significant influence over their respective clans. These powerful individuals are chosen as successors by the current Keeper, with the selection criteria varying from bloodline heritage to the completion of great feats. Prospective Keepers undergo journeys to explore the world, accumulate knowledge, and gain valuable experiences to prepare them for their future roles.

The responsibilities of a Keeper are vast and encompass many crucial aspects of clan life. They serve as mentors, imparting knowledge and wisdom to the members of their clan. Keepers often take on the roles of healers, tending to the physical and spiritual well-being of their people. Additionally, they bear the vital task of chronicling the history and traditions of their clan, preserving the rich heritage of the Dalish. One of the remarkable aspects of Keepers is their extended lifespans, a gift bestowed upon them through the mastery of ancient elven magic, which takes lifetimes to learn and cast. This longevity enables them to accumulate a vast wealth of knowledge and experience, further solidifying their position as the guiding pillars of their clans.
