Chapter 1:
On the difference between potions, poisons and salves, as well as other basic terminology.
A potion is mixture of alchemical or herbal ingredients capable of eliciting an instant effect on the Drinker. Most commonly it is manufactured with an alchemical kit or herbalist's kit and a fire. These potions are water based and usable for a wide variety of purposes. Because the base ingredient is specified, there is an upper limit to the effects possible in this way.
*Correction as of 6ed, many higher tier "potions" are not actually potions, but are considered as such. The term has come to be a catch all phrase and should be treated as such. The difference is that often their base is not water, but specific bloods, liquids, or other less savory ingredients.*
A Salve is a topically applied remedy, often used by druids and medicine men. Most often these are created using an herbalist's kit, however, some prefer the use of alchemical kits and a subsequent soaking of a specific rag. As these are topical, many times the effect will take some time to work and so these are ill favored for adventurers, but common amongst clerics and healers. The other notable difference is that they have a delayed action, healing slower or providing immunity for longer than potions. Often salves will begin to act within 10 minutes and last up to an hour.
An Unguent refers to another topically applied remedy, the difference is that it is often smeared over the body and provides longer lasting effects than a salve, however it may take time to enact. These may take up to an hour to initially enact their effects, but the effects may last anywhere from six months to permanent augmentations. They are often made of alcoholic bases.
A Tincture is an alcoholically based potion, these are often more potent, but with more specific effects than typical potions. Effects will be instantaneous as with potions, but typically the effect lasts a shorter duration and is more specific to scenarios.
A Tonic is an embittered potion, typically containing a narcotic or highly potent ingredient with addictive properties. The bitterness is designed to reduce the chances of addiction. This, however, has been shown to only have middling effectiveness and many of these are highly addictive. Their actions are typically immediate, but they will have long term psychological effects including dependencies.
A Philter is known from its most popular usage, the Philter of Love. Typically, this variant of potion incorporates physical ingredients that are not boiled down or purified to form the actual potion in question. Their essence is more clearly preserved and strained through some form of cold purification to yield the final result.
Effervescents refer to a breed of potion dried to contain a potent spell or effect on them, and then when used turn to gas, releasing a cloud housing a certain effect. This is beneficial in that a large number of creatures are affected by the potion, however, often it's effects are diluted. Notable examples include Effervescent of Sulfur, otherwise known as The Nightmare Sleep.
Antivenins are a subset of potion designed specifically to counteract natural toxicities, these are unique in that the most common base of these potions require a component of the creature whose venom it is. This is frequently the venom itself, but in many cases it can be the blood, saliva or spinal fluid of such a creature, if it retains any of these. i.e. The venom of a bone naga can only be counteracted with powdered bone of the creature.
Antidotes are a subset of potion designed specifically to counteract man-made poisons, for those treating these disorders it is best to have a number of the ingredients on hand as general practice. Much of what has been included are Antidotes for common poisons seen across Draguin, as more esoteric poisons often do not have an antidote and require direct divine intervention to heal.
A Poison is at its heart, merely a deadly variant of any of the above types of concoctions, and there are a variety of effects and differing methods of identification. These have been included more for the necessity of healers to be able to identify poisons when they are used on those they are attempting to heal. Common Symptoms have been included as well as manufacture, to aid in identifying poisons from a poisoner's lair.
