The Sylelarant Chruch (sil-uh-LAR-unt)

The Sylelarant Church is the dominant faith among elves, centered around the teachings of Alethemelort, known as the Infallible Brother. The Sylelarant Church doesn't view Alethemelort as the creator of all things but rather as an ascended being who achieved a higher state of existence and gained profound cosmic wisdom.

Key Beliefs:

Ascension:

Alethemelort was once a mortal elf who transcended his mortal form through deep spiritual practices and enlightenment to become a divine being.

Divine Wisdom:

After his ascension, Alethemelort gained access to universal truths and cosmic knowledge, which he shared with his followers.

Tenets

Divine Hierarchy:

The church teaches that spiritual enlightenment comes through obedience to those higher in the church hierarchy rather than through personal reflection.

Predestination:

Some are born destined for enlightenment, while others are meant to serve. This justifies social inequality within elven society.

Ritualistic Purity:

Emphasis on complex rituals and cleansing practices, believing that perfecting these rituals is the path to spiritual growth. Isolation for Purity: This doctrine encourages separation from other races and cultures to maintain spiritual "purity," contradicting Alethemelort's teachings of universal connection.

Prosperity as Divine Favor:

Wealth and social status are signs of Alethemelort's blessing, leading to a focus on material success.

Unquestioning Faith:

Doubt is treated as a spiritual failing.

Cosmic Debt:

The belief that all beings owe a debt to the universe must be repaid through service to the church.

Practices:

Tithe of Time:

Followers must dedicate a significant portion of their time to church activities, often at the expense of personal or family life.

Confession and Penance:

Regular, public confessions of failings, followed by church-mandated penances.

Sacred Texts Restriction:

Only high-ranking clergy are allowed to interpret sacred texts, with lay followers discouraged from reading them directly.

Hierarchical Meditation:

Group meditation sessions where participants are arranged according to their church rank.

Purity Fasts:

Extreme fasting practices believed to cleanse the body and spirit.

Loyalty Oaths:

Periodic renewal of oaths swearing loyalty to the church hierarchy.

Ancestral Judgement Rituals:

Ceremonies where one's ancestors are judged by church leaders, affecting the social standing of living descendants.

Enlightenment Trials:

Grueling physical and mental tests that followers must pass to advance in church hierarchy.

Isolation Retreats:

Extended periods of solitary confinement as a form of spiritual practice.

Cosmic Alignment Ceremonies:

Elaborate, expensive rituals that only the wealthy can fully participate in, believed to align one with Alethemelort's will.

The Sylelarant Church Hierarchy:

The Sovereign:

The supreme leader of the church, believed to be Alethemelort's direct conduit on the material plane. This position is held for life and is chosen through a secretive process known only to the upper echelons of the church.

The Illuminated Council:

A group of seven high-ranking clerics who serve as advisors to The Sovereign and govern significant aspects of the church. They are often from influential elven families.

Ascended Luminaries:

Regional leaders who oversee large territories. They interpret doctrine for their regions and manage significant church resources.

Enlightened Guardians:

Local church leaders are responsible for individual communities or cities. They conduct significant rituals and enforce church doctrine.

Devoted Disciples:

Initiates who have taken vows to serve the church. They perform various supporting roles and undergo rigorous training and testing.

The Faithful:

Regular church followers who do not hold official positions are expected to participate in rituals, provide tithes, and obey church doctrine.

Unenlightened:

Non-followers or those who have fallen out of favor with the church. They are often subject to discrimination and may face pressure to convert or conform.

Current State:

There's growing tension between Alethemelort's original teachings and the church's current practices. Some heretical sects believe the church has strayed from Alethemelort's true vision, leading to internal conflicts and the potential for reform movements.
