Agere

Agere (uh-GEER-e) was the Proto-Ascendant god of luck, trickery, and the arts as well as the patron of merchants, gamblers, performers, and the desperate seekers of a change in fortune. There are conflicting ideologies on how Agere fits into the greater Vielamorian pantheons described by some as a human who attained godhood through trickery and described by others as a mythological figure said to visit humans as a convenient travel-weary merchant.

Relationships

Agere is incredibly prideful due to earning his position in the pantheons. His relationships span dire enemies to truest companions, but often seem in a constant flux.

Worshipers

Prior to Starfall, Agere bore worshipers across all the lands of Vielamor. Agere’s worship among the various races reflect cultural stereotypes with Halflings praising The Sneak and Gnomes praising The Trickster. Wherever humans can be found, Agere’s worship is not far for better or for worse. He is revered as The Actor or The Merchant but is just as frequently feared reviled as The Shady Dealer and The Twin Masks.

Clergy

Agere’s clergy are known as The Troupe, from the idea that they are all actors on the stage of the world. While many, including clerics, may blend into the populace, those that make their faith known are frequently recognized by Cypress and Cabernet vestments and the use of masks as their holy symbol. Members of The Troupe often celebrate the arts by performing for the public through stage productions, musical performances, impassioned speeches, and more. They are also known to provide workshops and schooling for bards and those seeking an arts education.

Temples

Temples to Agere are built to double as theaters. It is a high honor for traveling performers to be invited to perform up on The Troupe’s stage.

Dogma

The Troupe has three core beliefs:
  • Luck as a Guide, Not a Crutch: Followers of Agere believe that while luck can open doors, true success lies in one's skill and readiness. Luck is seen as Agere's "unseen hand" that may offer opportunity but demands action and skill to seize it.
  • The Balance of Comedy and Tragedy: Agere's dual masks remind worshippers that fortune is fleeting, a fleeting smile that can turn tragic in an instant. Devotees hold that one must tread lightly, appreciating fortune without expecting its permanence.
  • Right Place, Right Time: Worshippers are taught to cultivate awareness and readiness, believing that Agere rewards those who stay nimble and attentive, making the most of every opportune moment that luck offers.
Agere’s followers balance on the line of skill and luck, embracing opportunity and preparing for fortune’s next turn.

Rites

Worship of Agere is frequent and abundant while remaining subtle to the untrained eye. Followers are expected to adhere to Agere’s Cut. Made up of a portion of a follower’s food, money, etc, this cut is expected to be donated to The Troupe or the needy, who may be Agere in disguise.   The schedule for mass varies town to town, based on its culture, but is often made up of a string of performances of speech, song, and reenactments of fables, all while wearing comedy and/or tragedy masks.

Myths and Legends

The Actor’s Gambit or The Two Faces of Death: A common myth of Agere, it is said that he, a human man at the time, challenged Death to a popular game that utilized years of life as betting chips. The exact game changes depending on the culture of the individual but usually either cards or dice are involved. Agere, using his skill in acting and zeal, nearly beat The Shrouded One. Instead of besting the god, Agere offered a trade through a contract crafted and notarized by Affirhet: Agere would, through Death’s power, ascend to godhood. In exchange, Agere would provide Death with two guises to approach people depending on how they lived their life.
