Buzz Bugs

One of nature's truly unique creatures, the Buzz Bug is part of a family of beetles known as Bum Bugs. These slow moving, poorly protected creatures would normally be an easy meal to any type of predator if it weren't sheltered by it's damage immunities. As the Burn Bug doesn't burn, and the Bubble bug cannot drown, the Buzz Bug is immune to lightning. On Vexora, the Buzz Bug's only home is that of The Tempest Preserve, known for it's high volume of dangerous electrical storms.   The Bum Bugs get their name from relying on the landscape not only for food and shelter, but also for protection. In the case of the Buzz Bugs the lightning storms and high winds typically scare off predators that would normally swoop onto them from above. In addition the desert landscape provides little water, nutrition, and protection from the elements, so many creatures that would typically hunt these beetles don't really have a chance of surviving in the hazardous terrain.   Male Buzz Bugs typically range from 6- 8 inches in length and 4-5 inches in width. Female Buzz Bugs are typically larger, ranging from 7-10 inches in length and 6-7 inches in width. The females are typically colored deep-navy or black, and males are bright yellow with navy markings on their thin shells covering their wings. The mating call of the male Buzz Bugs consists of loud, high-pitched ringing noises, that usually provoke other suitors to compete with them. Typically this results in an extremely obnoxious symphony of desperation, but again because there aren't many predators to hear them they feel completely safe making these demonstrations.   These creatures remain plump and meaty because they are capable of feeding through photosynthesis, much like a plant. Underneath their wings they have what looks like a stinger, but it actually serves as a portable stem, that can dig 2-3 feet into the sands and soak up moisture. As they hydrate they lean backwards, presenting their bellies/legs up towards the sky. After a few moments their little feet swell, forming spheres that absorb sunlight, and providing the creature with nutrition.   A unique feature of Buzz Bugs is that they actually store electrical energy in their bodies. As a defense mechanism when they are scared or squeezed hard enough, they release a tiny bolt of lightning out of their stem-like features. This is normally not a very harmful attack, but when this shock hits the Storm Gravel of The Tempest Preserve, the ground reacts with a violent explosion (not as forceful as an actual lightning strike) and sends the Buzz Bug flying 30-40 feet away as a small "Lightning Tree" is produced.
