Orlann Veskar

Dread Captain of the Dread Reavers Orlann Veskar (a.k.a. "Black Tide")

"The sea don’t give, it takes. And so do I." Orlann Veskar   General Overview   Orlann “Black Tide” Veskar is one of the most infamous figures to ever sail the Arashi Depths. Feared as the ruthless commander of the Dread Reavers, the de facto ruler of Reaper’s Port, and the founder of the Black Council, Veskar has spent decades carving out an empire of salt, blood, and gold. He is a man who seized power through fear, held it through cunning, and maintained it through sheer force of will.   Now 58 years old, Veskar remains a commanding presence, though time has begun to etch its toll upon him. The once fiery ambition of youth has tempered into cold calculation, and while his grip over the seas has not loosened, whispers suggest he is seeking something more than wealth and power in his later years.   To his men, he is a legend, a warlord of the tides, a man who built an empire from nothing. To his enemies, he is a predator, a force of nature as relentless as the Black Tide he is named after. And to those who dare defy him—he is death itself.   Orlann Veskar is more than just a pirate. He is the storm, the tide, and the terror that follows. And as long as the sea endures, so too will his legend.

Personal history

Early Years (Before 439 AEL)   Born in the lawless gutters of a forgotten port town, Orlann Veskar was raised in poverty, violence, and desperation. His childhood was defined by hunger, theft, and survival, where the only law was the law of the blade. No one gave him anything, and so he learned to take.   By the age of 12, he was already running with criminals, serving under a dockside smuggler in a backwater trading town. By 16, he had killed for the first time. By 18, he had betrayed his crew, stolen their ship, and set out on his own.   The Founding of the Dread Reavers (439 AEL, Age 23)   At 23, Veskar was already a feared name among corsairs and cutthroats, but he had greater ambitions than raiding fishing villages. With a stolen brig and a handful of outcasts, he formed the first iteration of the Dread Reavers—a small but vicious band of pirates who struck swiftly and without mercy.   First Major Raid (440 AEL) – The Dread Reavers raided their first major target, a merchant vessel bound for Al-Hajjad, establishing their notoriety as more than common brigands.   Capture of the Black Dagger (443 AEL) – Veskar led a daring assault on a rival pirate lord, stealing a heavily armed warship and securing the Reavers' place among the most dangerous crews in the Arashi Depths.   The Black Tide Siege (448 AEL) – After years of ruthless expansion, the Dread Reavers commanded an entire fleet, using them to blockade key trade routes, earning Veskar his infamous nickname.   The Rivalry with Cassian Stormfall   Though Veskar claims not to fear anyone, there is one name that he cannot ignore—Cassian “Kraken’s Maw” Stormfall.   The two began their careers around the same time, both rising from nothing to command fearsome fleets.   Unlike Veskar, Cassian built his power on loyalty and respect, a contrast to Veskar’s reign of fear and brutality.   Their first battle (451 AEL) was a brutal engagement, with both captains walking away bloodied, neither claiming victory.   Though their direct clashes have grown rare, they remain eternal rivals, each believing that the other is the greatest obstacle to their dominion over the seas.   The Seizure of Reaper’s Port (452 AEL, Age 36)   By 452 AEL, Veskar was not just a pirate—he was a warlord.   Reaper’s Port, then a lawless freeport, was plagued by warring pirate factions. Veskar saw an opportunity.   Through a combination of assassination, bribery, and open warfare, he seized control of the city, establishing himself as its de facto ruler.   The Founding of the Black Council (455 AEL, Age 39)   Realizing that even he could not rule alone, Veskar established the Black Council, a loose coalition of the most powerful pirate captains.   The Council serves as a way to prevent all-out war, instead settling disputes through politics and blood oaths. Veskar remains its most dominant force, ensuring that no decision is made without his approval—or without consequence.     The Treaty with the Al-Muru Daxin Contingent (469 AEL, Age 53)   In an unexpected turn, Veskar brokered a treaty with the Al-Muru Daxin Contingent, a powerful faction of traders and mercenaries.   The agreement allowed Dread Reaver-controlled ships to pass through Al-Muru territories unchallenged, in exchange for Veskar’s protection of certain trade routes.   This move secured his financial empire, proving that Veskar is not just a pirate, but a strategist.

Morality & Philosophy

Survival above all. Veskar believes the strong take what they can, and the weak are left to drown.   The gods are nothing. He holds no reverence for deities, believing that they do nothing for those who do not take for themselves.   Fear is the greatest currency. He has built an empire upon terror—and it has never failed him.
