Galdred
Overview
Nestled within the mist-shrouded boglands of the Free Mercantile Lords' domain, Galdred is a town steeped in secrecy, alchemy, and quiet defiance. Located west of Tzarog’s Bay and deeper inland, it lacks direct sea access, making it less prominent in the grander maritime trade. However, its hidden strengths lie in rare swamp-grown alchemical ingredients, smugglers’ hideaways, and a deeply self-sufficient populace that thrives where others would falter.
About 18 miles south of the town, along the southern coastline, lies Galdred’s Dockyard, a small but vital outpost serving sailors and merchants unwilling—or unable—to dock at Tzarog’s bustling harbors. A narrow, poorly maintained road winds its way through the boglands, connecting the dockyards to Galdred’s heart, but travelers are warned: the path is treacherous, prone to flooding, sinking mud, and creatures lurking just out of sight.
While not the most indispensable holding of the Free Mercantile Lords, Galdred plays its role well, acting as a supply hub for alchemists, herbalists, and covert traders. It is a town of shadows and fog, where gold flows in whispers rather than grand exchanges.
Population
Town Proper: ~7,000 (varies seasonally)
Dockside Outpost: ~500 (mostly transient population of sailors, smugglers, and traders)
Galdred is a town of mist and mystery, where nature and commerce intertwine in unexpected ways. While the city may lack the grandeur of Tzarog, it is a crucial node in the region’s economy, providing resources, refuge, and rare wares for those brave enough to seek them out.
Industry & Trade
Galdred’s primary exports are highly sought-after, making it a valuable, albeit unofficial, asset to the Free Mercantile Lords.
Alchemical & Herbal Trade – The bog produces rare fungi, mosses, and herbs that cannot be cultivated elsewhere.
Illegal Goods & Smuggling – With its hidden tunnels and remote location, Galdred is a haven for contraband movement.
Fishing & Game Hunting – The town’s skilled marsh hunters provide exotic meats, bogfish, and amphibians used in medicinal brews.
Moonshining & Distillation – The locals are infamous for their potent liquors, brewed using unique swamp ingredients.
Tanning & Leatherwork – The wetlands are home to large aquatic beasts, whose hides and scales are transformed into high-quality leather and armor.
Infrastructure
Galdred’s infrastructure is built for survival, not beauty. Roads are elevated on wooden planks, and buildings are built on stilts to prevent sinking into the soft, boggy earth. While some improvements have been made, maintaining the town is an uphill battle against nature itself.
Stilted Buildings & Wooden Walkways – Many homes and businesses are raised several feet above the bog, accessible by wooden bridges or ladders.
Murky Canals & Reed Boats – Due to frequent flooding, flat-bottom boats and rafts are a common means of travel.
Shrouded Dockyards – The southern dock outpost, though small, is a crucial stop for sailors and smugglers alike, offering supplies, hidden storerooms, and safe haven from patrols.
The Hidden Paths – Locals maintain secret trails and causeways, allowing them to move unseen through the boglands—a fact many an outsider has learned too late.
Taverns & Inns – While Tzarog hosts lavish halls for the elite, Galdred’s drinking dens are discreet, dimly lit, and built for those who prefer to avoid attention.
Districts
Galdred is a small town, but its layout reflects its diverse yet secretive economy.
The Mistmarket – The heart of the town, where alchemists, herbalists, and poachers trade rare swamp ingredients and tinctures.
The Bogside Slums – Home to low-wage laborers, hunters, and those who prefer to be forgotten.
The Smugglers’ Veil – A network of hidden warehouses, tunnels, and concealed docks where black-market trade flourishes.
The Dockside Outpost – Located 18 miles south, this small settlement serves as a resting point for weary sailors, pirates, and rogue merchants.
Guilds and Factions
While Tzarog’s ruling elite keep Galdred under control, the town operates largely on its own rules.
The Black Mire Consortium – A loose council of alchemists, hunters, and black-market traders that controls the town’s economy.
The Swampfang Syndicate – A band of smugglers and mercenaries operating out of the Smugglers’ Veil.
The Drowned Hand – An assassin’s guild rumored to have a presence in Galdred, using the bogs to dispose of evidence.
The Riverwardens – A rough militia force, composed of hunters and boatmen, who enforce their own brand of law.
The Gilded Ledger (Limited Presence) – Unlike Tzarog, banking and finance are a lesser concern here, though some lenders offer "alternative" loans.

Galdred’s origins are as murky as its waters, with legends of exiled criminals and cursed lands defining its past.
