Nexian Vellenor
Jarl
The Jarl of the Hearthglen Vale
Nexian Vellenor is a polarizing figure in the Hearthglen Vale, notable for his exceptional leadership skills, and his logical, frugal mind. He has grown Blackburn considerably since he took over leadership from the late Kayne Dillion, and he is very forthcoming about his plans to become a Jarl. This is not without challenge however, as a small group of people believe the success is owed to the notorious businessman and guild leader Ceric Alloro. These people would rather see Ceric as the Jarl, and they have taken action to discredit Nexian, though they are a small minority.
The Boy Wonder
Nexian Vellenor is the bastard son of a wealthy high elf from Coldhall and an impecunious servant. He took the name of his father, though he wasn't officially recognized as his son until recently, when House Vellenor jumped at the opportunity to have a seat on the Council of Jarls. Nexian lived with his mother and her family in Greystone until he was fourteen, when he left home to apply for the College of Lore in upper Coldhall. He excelled in his classes and was soon recognized as a "boy wonder", getting top grades, and being well respected by his classmates. After his graduation, at 23 years of age, he seized an opportunity for adventure, and signed up with a large group of explorers, on a quest to settle a village in largely unexplored territory. The group was led by the half-orc Kayne Dillion, a Cattle Baron from the Emerald Hills. Kayne took Nexian as his assistant, and Nexian spent a lot of his time learning practical skills from Kayne, as well as learning how to lead and manage a large group of people. Kayne Dillion was unfortunately killed in 1558, when a group of Gnolls attacked the town. Against Nexian's advice, Kayne wanted to help defend the town, and after fighting admirably, he was pierced by an arrow and mortally wounded. Kayne bled out on the battlefield, which deeply affected Nexian, as they had become close friends. Still, he admired Kayne's courage, and vowed to finish what he started, by making Blackburn a respected and admired city someday. After the death of Kayne, his second in command, a dwarf named Bragram Flaskjaw became the mayor of Blackburn.
Coming to Power
Bragram was a powerful warrior, but a bad decision maker. The Gnolls were becoming a growing problem, but Bragram neglected many other issues in favor of constant battle with Gnolls. Because of this, most of the other issues, such as economic problems, were dealt with by Nexian. Nexian constantly advised against open combat with the Gnolls, insisting that they attempt to find where the Gnolls were coming from, but he was not taken seriously. Finally, after years of needless war, Bragram died doing what he did best, which was fighting. A large force of Gnolls attacked Blackburn, killing several people, including Bragram Flaskjaw. After his death, Nexian took leadership immediately. He sent out scouts to follow the Gnolls for days, and they eventually tracked them to where they were camping. As his first act as leader, he led a large force to go wipe out the camp. After a large battle, they had successfully killed one of the largest groups of Gnolls in the region. They used brutal, scorched earth tactics, and burned down the entire camp, killing every Gnoll. The only survivors were the few children, which were used as hostages and eventually ransomed back to a group of Gnolls in exchange for relative peace. during the battle, they were able to identify the leader of the group, the Gnoll that had killed Kayne Dillion. The Gnoll was brought back to Blackburn and publicly executed, though its wife and adult son were unceremoniously killed in their homes. This marked a major victory for Blackburn, and more success quickly followed. Nexian was able to grow the town considerably in the following years and cultivated a strong economy.
Family and Future
The town is now large enough that the Council of Jarls is considering making it a Hold. Nexian has even started to refer to himself as a Jarl, claiming that all the other Jarls need to do is make it official. Around this time, Nexian met a fellow Half-elf named Arlayna, and they soon married. Arlayna and Nexian moved into the newly constructed Mayor's mansion and had three children. They had a boy named Cyran in 1588, a girl named Ayla in 1592, and a boy named Kayne in 1600. Cyran is extremely smart but has no interest in leading, and he is currently studying the arcane arts at the Valia Academy of Magic in Allysium. Ayla is talented in other areas, and she is training in Freightway to be a Knight. Kayne is only 8 years old, and a bit of a troublemaker, but he is being brought up to lead Blackburn someday. Being a Half-elf, Nexian will likely live for around eighty more years, with his children also living around one hundred and eighty years. This means that Nexian will likely remain the leader of Blackburn for the foreseeable future, as long as he isn't killed.

Nexian is a half elf, the current leader of the city of Blackburn. He is ambitious, shrewd, and calculating, but not malicious. He tries to make every decision with the wellbeing of Blackburn in mind.
