Fjallinston

"They grow their crops, chop their trees, and live their lives. Not much else to say. In another world, maybe I'd have settled down here. Found a wife, built a house, became a wheat farmer, and enjoyed a nice mug of beer in town. It's almost an idyllic country. It's too bad that everyone acted like I had the Lizard Pox." -"Adventures of an Exiled Wanderer" by Erin the Exile   "Blessed by Fjallduna, who watches our crops. Taught by Nairuk, who shared his wisdom. Protected by Neikanei, who repelled the monsters. Fjallinston is the perfect home, chosen by the gods. We shall hide it away from any who seek to take it." - Awden Birch, courtier to king Rolfe
The eastern country of the Fjallsgard continent, the fertile land, cradled between the mountainous New Thridea and the Ice Wastes to the east, Fjallinston is the golden area in the entirety of the north. Years of raid from goblin tribes, Thridean Raiders, and were-beasts that roam the lands have made this place and it's people wary of any that they do not know.

Communities

Though nowhere near as populous as the other countries, Fjallinston benefits from the secluded nature of the towns and people here. The solid, low walls of the homes, the pin-sized windows, and the bare ornamentation don't paint inviting pictures to any unfamiliar with the land. Even livestock are kept hoarded away, discouraging any chance of theft. Granaries are Placed in the middle of the farming villages, where each individuals harvest is separately locked away to encourage safe-keeping. All those in a village know each other well, and some villages may even consist of several familial branches.   Foreigners would find it hard pressed to socialize or even simply ask for direction in these serene hamlets. Association with outsiders is brief and can become hostile if they feel uneasy. Only through correspondence, or through the traditional Fjalla customs will they open their arms to one who they've never seen. This is less so in large cities where trade is prevalent, but even then terse encounters are the norm for any visitors from another land.

History

Though the start of civilization in the region predates records, the country of Fjallinston is first referred to in a Thridic text in 566(Rebirth Era) (Not to be confused with Thritics, which are both an ethnic group and the name for the ancient seafaring empire. Thridic is the denonym for the country/citizens of "New Thridea") as follows:
"........And upon further negotiation, the king Rollo, son of Rolfe, will agree to supply the larger cities with grain and cattle during these hard times, in exchange for the service of one hundred of our best BludGuard. They shall endeavor to hunt the countryside for hostile animals, and tribes of SharpTeef, who have long confounded his Majesty."
This text along with the deal that it mentions was the beginning of the relationship between the New Thridic peoples and Fjallinston, as well as the eventual war in 600 RE. This picture paints them as very unorganized as well, since references to the war between them (dubbed The War of Grain by scholars for its heavy emphasis on food shortage in New Thridea) tell that many of the "soldiers" of the army were simple farmers, who came to war with pitchforks and farm tools. This clear advantage the freshly arrived raiders had would have won them the rights to these lands, were their eventual match not met.   In the darkest hours for the Fjalla people, The nomadic tribes of Otan and Aesvir became entangled in the war through an arranged marriage with the duaghter of an Otan chieftain and the Fjallinston heir, Prince Ivar. No sooner did this happen, did the New Thridic forces push the Aesvir from their lands, with hundreds of refugee tribesmen entering these lands for safety. The prince, who spoke on behalf of his people, called the warriors of the Otan and Aesvir to join the simple farm-folk on the field of battle in an effort to repel the invaders. This speech convinced at least 2300 Aesvir warriors, and 1500 Otan in total to join him in battle, adding to his force of 4000 farmers. Though largely under-trained and ill equipped, they had the element of numbers on their side, where the New Thrideans only had a standing force of 3100.   after a hard fought battle at the city of Frega's Fire, the combined forces defeated the Thrideans in a surprising victory. This one victory, coupled with the proclamation made by the prince to the captured soldiers, caused a stir in the newly minted capital of Hobsblud in Neo-Thridea. after 3 more years of grueling battles, a treaty between the two nations was signed, dividing the borders at the mountains known as Jagged Teeth.
