The Citadel
The Citadel is the headquarters of the Order of the Western Star. Built on a rocky island in the Boreal Sea, it serves as both a temple complex and a highly defensible fortress. The only way to access the Citadel is by way of a single four-lane bridge, a dock, or by air; while the surrounding water is only a few feet deep at low tide and some land has been dredged to create farmland, any part of the island not protected by walls is sheer, jagged cliffs.
The Citadel is built in concentric layers starting from the top. The pinnacle of the mount is a traditional seven-sided temple, surmounted by a spire with an Aeonic star at the very top (which also flies the banners of the Order). Directly below that is the Great Hall, which contains classrooms, a library, a scriptorium, and the Synod's offices and meeting room. On either side of that sit the paladins' barracks and the clerics' cloisters. The next level down consists of the Citadel village, a loose collection of buildings including a dormitory and shops for visitors, the homes of various laymen who work for the Order, and a few small farms that supply the entire island.
In addition to the outside structures, there are also many underground tunnels and chambers hidden within the rocks. The uppermost are cellars, storerooms, and the armory. Below that, there are crypts housing the bones of great clerics, paladins, and other past members of the Order.
