Catherine Sorenson

Dame/Prelate Catherine Sorenson (a.k.a. Cate)

Mental characteristics

Personal history

Prelate Catherine was born somewhere in eastern Vinland, but her actual parentage is uncertain. Her family realized quite early on that their daughter was something more than mortal, so they handed her over to the local temple of Pelor as a toddler, reasoning that the priests would be better equipped to help her realize whatever destiny the Gods had in store for her. Cate's early years were spent quite happily; Pelor is a god who treasures children for their innocence and potential, and it happens that His temples are quite popular, so she wanted for little. But there was always a sense of being different, because it was hard for her to hide being an aasimar with divine powers.
Seeking a way to better understand her gifts, Cate chose to join the clergy when she was twelve years old. She proved to have a good aptitude for healing and pastoral care, but lagged behind on the academic side of her studies. Her teachers did note that she was also fairly athletic, however, so one of them recommended her for paladin training. This turned out to be where she really excelled. In a few years, Catherine was sent to the Citadel for more advanced training, and assigned as a squire to Sir Salazar Nailo.
Her training ended when she was eighteen years old. As her final task to earn knighthood, she had to complete a mission to the frontier. This was when she received a mission from her angelic guide, Galladia, for the first time in years. Galladia directed her to the Deadwoods, an area near the Boreal Sea that was a known portal to the Shadowfell. It took considerable argument, but the Knight-Commander finally relented and allowed her to go. This would be a formative experience. Catherine spent four long months in the Shadowfell, fighting everything from undead to fiendish personifications of despair, with the help of several other adventurers. Her faith was tested many times. She made some terrible mistakes. And in the end, one of her fellow travelers betrayed the group, allowing an ancient shadow dragon to escape the plane just so she could follow him through the gate. Catherine made it her life's mission to hunt down that dragon and the svirfneblin who freed him. When she returned to the Citadel, accompanied by her two remaining companions to back up her story, the Council rewarded her with knighthood, honors, and authorization for an official mission against the dragon.
