Novo Voronsk
Barely more than fifty years ago, Novo Voronsk was established as a trading outpost by the Ruthenian Empire. The settlement was cut loose twenty years later, because it ceased to be profitable. The exiled prince who had been sent to run the colony as a punishment, Leonid, proceeded to declare it an independent Principality with himself as the ruler. He now reigns over his tiny collection of exiles and fishermen from a modest manor house at the center of town. It has few distinctions beyond being the capital and the oldest, largest settlement in Opona.
Industry & Trade
The fishing industry is one of two sources of income that sustain Novo Voronsk. Salmon, crab, and other products of the sea harvested from the area are in high demand down the coast, so there are boats coming in and out of the harbor for most of the year until the ocean freezes up in winter.
Second in line, but arguably more profitable, is the fur trade. Bears, mink, beavers, foxes, and other arctic creatures have exceptionally soft, thick fur, which makes their pelts luxury items for some and necessities for others. Furs are traded in town or sent south by dogsled to be shipped out.
Other than what can be hunted, fished, grown, or foraged from the wild, everything else has to be imported. Greenhouses can be kept going even in the dead of winter using magic to provide heat and sunlight, but there are limits to what they can fit; fruit trees are difficult, for example, so things like citrus fruits are a rare treat brought up from southern Penglai. There's also a short summer growing season during which the locals grow hardy crops like potatoes and onions. The potatoes are considered especially important because they can be turned into vodka, which brings in some additional money at the town's one tavern.
