Master General
To directly serve the Sultan in the Osmad Sultanate is one of the highest honors one can have. To also climb the rank of the Sultanate's military to a commanding officer, is itself a feat that demonstrates one's character. Therefore, the position of Master General is arguably the most respectable and most powerful position in the Sultanate, next to the title of Sultan itself.
The Master General is the leader of the Sultanate's military. All its soldiers, guards, and officers ultimately answer to the Master General themself. It is their job to direct military actions in times of conflict, to defend the Sultanate from any and all threats, and to serve the Sultan as their trusted advisor and personal guard.
Qualifications
The Master General must have attained a high ranking officer position and have demonstrated exceptional combat abilities and loyalty to the Sultanate.
Appointment
The Master General is appointed by the Sultan's choice. Typically, when searching for a new Master General, the old one will recommend certain individuals to the Sultan as potential candidates, at which point the Sultan then examines each candidate to their liking. Most commonly, the Sultan will have the individuals appeal to them in a sort of interview. In some special cases, the Sultan has been known to try and learn about the individual by more discrete means. Some Sultans had even challenged their candidates by way of combat in order to test their skills. Regardless of the method, once the Sultan has made their choice, they summon the candidate for an audience and perform a brief ceremony where the previous Master General passes on the mantel and mark onto their successor.
Duties
The Master General serves the Sultan, who ultimately serves the people of the Osmad Sultanate. It is their job to conduct military operations, from planning offensive campaigns to stationing battalions in defense of Bekilk. They also have the authority over the city and palace guards. Finally, the Master General serves as the Sultan's advisor in matters of war as well as their own personal elite guard. The Master General also takes the liberty of training the Sultan and their children in combat.
Accoutrements & Equipment
The Master General wears an elegant breastplate and a pristine mantle with a red half-cloak dangling behind it. On their waist is a cloth mark with the insignia of the Osmad Sultanate. They wield any martial weapon of their choice which is usually specially crafted and has some sort of magical property.
Grounds for Removal/Dismissal
The life expectancy of the Master General is what one would expect of a military officer. From facing monsters, to assassins, to hostile armies, the risk of death in battle is something all Master Generals have come to terms with. Thankfully, the Sultanate has not been involved in any political conflicts in recent times, and so the recent Master Generals have had few opportunities to fight alongside the army. The primary cause for dismissal for recent Master Generals, is simply their age hindering their ability to fight effectively.
