So You're Telling Me I'm Dead...

Requirements: The traveler nearly dies through exposure to the elements
"You wake up in a small and meticulously clean stone chamber. The room is remarkably empty, without any furniture at all except a short stone stool that is affixed to the floor. Upon that stool sits an old man with a long grey beard and flowing grey robes, watching you intently. When he notices you are awake he immediately begins speaking in a voice rusty from disuse"   "I'm afraid you're in quite a predicament. You see, you're dead. You died of exposure just last night."   "While at first the old man's words seem impossible, you quickly begin to notice unnerving details about yourself. You aren't breathing, and when you check for a pulse it isn't there. Everything in the room seems grey, not simply the walls and furniture. The old man gives you some time to react to this fact, eventually speaking after a long moment of silence"   "While this may seem quite alarming, never fear. I happen to have the perfect solution. You see, I am a disciple of ways long forgotten. I can deliver you from death at the cost of just a little of your spirit. After all, you still have great things to accomplish in this world: your story does not end here."   "So what do you say? Your spirit, or your life?"
"Your fate is in your hands. You decide to venture outside, to deliberate a little more."   "Outside the open door, a funeral procession is passing by. They seemingly cannot sense you, and anything you try to touch them with goes right through them. They are casually talking about a traveler that died last night, and how it was 'quite a shame old Roeth had to bear the cost for it. Just because t'was his land doesn't make it right. Those fools in the Council ought to do something about it.' "   "This spooks you. You quickly stumble back into the room and ask for the old man's help. The old man gladly aids you, placing his left hand on your forehead and channeling strange energy straight into your mind. You black out, and wake up where you first went to sleep. Physically, you are fine, but you feel shaken and drained. You hope you never need to rely on the assistance of that old man ever again."
