Gehlios

Curate (a.k.a. Missionary)

Gehlios is a weathered and grizzled missionary of St. Cuthbert hailing from Verbobonc, sent to Nulb by Bishop Haufren of the Chauteaux Order. Hardened by years of service, he bears a no-nonsense demeanor and a sharp eye for danger. Gehlios has been tasked with spreading the teachings of St. Cuthbert in the morally destitute village of Nulb, while also keeping a watchful eye on any nefarious activities tied to the resurgence of evil in the region.   Clad in splint armor and wielding a shield bearing the emblem of the Chauteaux Order, Gehlios is a figure of stark authority and quiet strength. Despite his gruffness, he harbors a fierce dedication to his students and the mission, even if his faith in their survival is tempered by realism.

Physical Description

Gehlios is a rugged man in his late forties with a deeply lined face and a prominent beard streaked with gray. His long brown hair is often unkempt, partially hidden beneath the crumpled red hat of the Chauteaux Order, a symbol of his station. His piercing eyes reveal wisdom gained through hardship, and his strong hands show calluses from both weapon training and long years of clerical duties.   He wears well-worn splint armor with the sigil of St. Cuthbert etched into his shield. Though sturdy, his armor is scuffed and scarred, a testament to battles fought and survived.
  • Height: 6’1”
  • Build: Broad-shouldered and solid
  • Distinguishing Features: Crumpled red hat, stern demeanor, weathered face

Background

Born in Verbobonc, Gehlios entered the service of St. Cuthbert in his youth, drawn to the church’s strict moral code and sense of justice. Rising through the ranks of the Chauteaux Order, he became known for his unyielding devotion and pragmatic approach to faith. Gehlios has long been a missionary, venturing into harsh and lawless areas to bring St. Cuthbert’s teachings to those in need.   Bishop Haufren entrusted him with leading the missionary group in Nulb—a difficult task, given the town’s unsavory reputation. The students under his care are inexperienced idealists, and Gehlios sees it as his duty to prepare them for the harsh realities of life. His mission is twofold: to strengthen the faith in St. Cuthbert and to gather intelligence on any signs of evil festering in Nulb.

Motivations

Gehlios is driven by an unwavering sense of duty and a desire to bring order to the chaos of the world. He genuinely believes in the teachings of St. Cuthbert, but his faith is practical rather than blind. He sees the mission in Nulb as an opportunity to instill strength and discipline in his students while rooting out potential threats to the region.   While Gehlios harbors a deep-seated mistrust of Nulb’s residents, he remains open to forming alliances if it serves the mission. His stern demeanor often hides a cautious optimism for the students under his care, whom he hopes will grow into capable defenders of the faith.

Relationships

  • The Students: Gehlios views the students as well-meaning but naive. He admires their courage and willingness to spread the faith but often doubts their ability to survive Nulb’s dangers. Despite his tough exterior, he is protective of them and determined to see them succeed.
  • The Men-at-Arms: Gehlios trusts his men-at-arms implicitly, relying on their experience and loyalty to keep the group safe. He shares a camaraderie with them born of shared hardships and mutual respect.
  • The People of Nulb: Gehlios has little patience for Nulb’s corrupt inhabitants. He is wary of Lady Lmag and the various criminal factions in the town but recognizes the need for diplomacy to accomplish his goals.

Notable Items

  • Gillum Letter of Credit: Extends up to 500 gp, a vital resource for purchasing supplies or leveraging influence in Nulb. 11. The Gillum
  • Holy Symbol of St. Cuthbert: A simple but revered symbol Gehlios uses in his prayers and blessings.
  • Shillelagh Spell Access: As a member of the Chauteaux Order, Gehlios can cast this spell once per day, imbuing a wooden weapon with divine power.

Dialogue: Gehlios Explains the Mission

You meet Gehlios in the shadow of the creaking two-story cottage, his weathered face made sterner by the muted light filtering through the cracked shutters. He adjusts the crumpled red hat of the Chauteaux Order with a calloused hand, his sharp eyes fixed on you with a mix of scrutiny and reluctant approval.
"Ah, adventurers," he begins, his voice gravelly but commanding. "I imagine you’re wondering what brought me and this lot to a cesspool like Nulb. No offense if you happen to like the smell of swamp water and stale sin—it’s not my choice of locale either."   He folds his arms across his chest, his long brown hair brushing the shoulders of his worn surcoat. The symbol of St. Cuthbert is prominent on his chest, a constant reminder of his faith.   "Let me lay it out plain," he continues, his tone hardening. "We’re here on the orders of Bishop Haufren. He sent me—personally—to bring a little light to this forsaken corner of the world. St. Cuthbert teaches us to hammer sense into the senseless, to make the crooked path straight. Nulb? This place is as crooked as they come. It's a nest of vipers, pirates, and cultists. I reckon you’ve already sniffed out some of its... charm."   Gehlios’s gaze flickers briefly to his students inside the cottage, some of whom are nervously watching you through the broken windows. He exhales heavily, shaking his head.   "Those kids in there? They’re green. Green as spring shoots. They think they can waltz in here and change the world with a few kind words and well-meaning sermons. I’m hoping Nulb teaches them some hard lessons—lessons they won’t forget. If they survive, they might even be better for it."   His eyes narrow, his focus shifting back to you.   "But make no mistake, I’m not just babysitting. Bishop Haufren wants me to report on any evil stirring in these parts. This town has history with the Temple of Elemental Evil, and the Bishop suspects the rot hasn’t been fully cut out yet. If you’ve seen or heard anything unusual, I’ll be all ears. Information like that could save lives—mine, my students', and maybe even yours."   He leans in slightly, lowering his voice.   "Here’s the thing. This place is teeming with danger. Pirates. Bandits. And worse things still. I’ve got four good men-at-arms who know how to handle themselves, but I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t glad to see a few extra swords in town. You’re not here to convert, I get that. But if you’re here to do some good—or make a name for yourselves—maybe we can help each other out."   Gehlios steps back, adjusting his hat again, his demeanor shifting to a grim resolve.   "That’s the mission, plain and simple. Spread the word of St. Cuthbert, and maybe live to see another sunrise. If you’ve got questions or need guidance, I’m not going anywhere—at least, not until this job’s done or Nulb swallows me whole."   With that, he gives you a firm nod and turns to the door, barking an order at one of the students gawking nearby.   "Ormn! Stop staring and get back to sharpening that blade. You’ll need it soon enough."
