Whispering Expanse

The Whispering Expanse is a frigid sea that encompasses the northern pole of the continent of Velia. The sea is so called because of the eerie whispers that can be heard echoing across its surface, as if the sea itself is alive and communicating with those who sail upon it.

The history of the Whispering Expanse is steeped in mystery and legend. According to ancient tales, the sea was created by the god of the sea, Thassa, as a boundary between the mortal realm and the divine realm. It is said that those who venture too far into the Whispering Expanse risk being lost forever in the icy wastes, never to return.

Despite its dangers, the Whispering Expanse has been explored by brave sailors and adventurers throughout the ages. The sea is home to many strange and wondrous creatures, including enormous whales and huge, vicious, ancient sharks. Some sailors claim to have even seen the ghostly apparitions of ships that were lost at sea long ago, their spectral crew still manning the decks.

The northern tribes that live along the coast have long waged war against one another, fighting for control of the sea and the valuable resources it provides. Pirates and raiders are also common in the region, preying upon unsuspecting vessels that pass through their waters, though, this has lessened with the rise of Artorian navy. 

Despite its many dangers, the Whispering Expanse remains an important part of Velian culture and history. Its icy waters are a reminder of the harshness and unforgiving nature of the world, and those who dare to brave its depths are often celebrated as heroes and legends.

Local Legend

In the early days of the Artorian Empire, a group of explorers set sail into the frigid waters of the Whispering Expanse, seeking new lands and resources to expand their growing nation. They were a hardy crew, skilled in navigation and survival in even the harshest conditions.

As they journeyed deeper into the sea, they began to encounter strange phenomena. Mysterious whispers would seem to drift across the waves, barely audible but still somehow unsettling. At night, the crew would see strange lights dancing in the distance, as if beckoning them closer.

Despite these ominous signs, the explorers continued on, driven by their desire to discover the secrets of this mysterious sea. But as they sailed further into the Expanse, they began to notice that their crew was growing smaller. Men and women were disappearing without a trace, leaving behind only eerie whispers in the night. Soon, it became clear that something was stalking the ship. Whatever it was, it was intelligent and malevolent, preying on the crew and taking them one by one. The explorers fought back with all their might, but they were no match for this otherworldly foe.

In the end, only a handful of survivors made it back to Artoria, shaken and traumatized by their encounter with the Whispering Expanse. They spoke of strange creatures lurking beneath the waves, of ghostly apparitions that haunted their dreams, and of whispers that seemed to speak to them in unknown tongues.

Despite their warning, other sailors continued to venture into the Expanse, drawn by its secrets and the promise of new lands to conquer. But the whispers never ceased, and the sea continued to claim its victims, earning its reputation as one of the most treacherous and mysterious places in all the world.
