Demonic Reversal

"In distant ages, our souls were split,   And half was put to rest,   And if the lost awaken,   Our minds they shall infest.   We find ourselves as hosts,   Our sanity is blessed,   But if the lost awaken,   We shall be naught but guests."

Causes

Demonic reversal is a hostile Tulpa takeover of the body, usually as the result of Tulpathic overuse or careless Tulpathic direct calls. The Tulpa typically shows a degree of activity and hostility before an imminent Demonic reversal. However, a Demonic reversal cannot occur without conscious or subconscious submission or consent to the Tulpa. Mental distress, pain, or even feelings of trust for the Tulpa can increase the chances of a takeover immensely.   Some Tulpas are not inclined to commit Demonic Reversal due to sheer disinterest or inactivity. Warlocks, therefore, are at higher risk.

Effects and symptoms

Demonic Reversal, despite appearances, does not shut down the nervous system. It Tulpathically exerts forces on the victim's physical body, nullifying any attempt at movement by the victim. The mind is fully aware during the reversal. Its senses and observations are relayed directly to the Tulpa. The Tulpa may mutilate the body by mutating or contorting its components in disturbing ways, typically done to cause distress to any outside threats. This has the secondary effect of making the Reversal fatal to the mind if an escape from its grasp is attempted: The body, piloted by the Tulpa, can withstand otherwise fatal damage Tulpathically. However, if the reversal were to end, the body would collapse under the sustained harm. The pain of the mutilation is consciously experienced by the mind and causes further distress, making escape attempts even less likely.   From the moment of reversal, a human victim is referred to as a "demon". In animals, the passing term is "fiend". In Hamatusha, the term is "Infernal". Reversal has been known to sporadically occur in bacteria, plants, and fungi, but not enough to warrant separate terms. Their Tulpas rarely show sufficient levels of hostility or activity.

Demons are naturally extremely skilled at Tulpathy, as a full submission of the mind allows near-seamless transfer of energy from the 4th Plane. They still have to be careful with all dangers of Tulpathy, especially manaburn affecting the victim's mind. If the mind is irreparably damaged, the Demon will die.   Demonic reversal is almost unanimously incurable. Chances of survival have decreased to near zero just one minute after reversal.

Safety

The best precaution for this condition is mental training. Fear therapy can help lower distress in dangerous situations. Mental dominance training can decrease the chances of subconscious submission to a hostile Tulpa. Meditation can help ease passively accumulating mental stress. Avoid prolonged contact with warlocks, Katarai, or Demons. Their proximity can increase Tulpa activity and hostility. It is important to understand that every Tulpa is a sapient entity. As such, safety measures cannot be entirely standardized.     A reversal will only be undone by a calm, dominant mind. The Demon will likely attempt to make this exceedingly difficult. The highest chances of undoing a reversal are immediately after the reversal occurs, before the Demon has a chance to mutilate the body beyond repair. One must clear their mind of all submission and distress, and the takeover process will naturally be undone.   When encountering a Demon, extreme caution is advised at all times. You may hear it verbally communicate with your own Tulpa, convincing it to become hostile towards you and to attempt its own reversal. Ignore its terror-inducing appearance. It is only meant to frighten you. Remain calm at all costs. The Demon can survive damage in all parts of its body, except the victim's brain. Beware, the brain may have been relocated to any part of its body, targeting the head can be an exercise in futility. The Demon is a skilled warlock, so try to make it exert itself and cause manaburn. Tools like RadioFocus rifles react violently to Mana, the Demon's main source of power.   You can also attempt to communicate with the victim directly, as it is fully aware of its situation at all times. Succeeding in causing the victim's mind to become calm and dominant will undo the reversal, killing the Demon in most cases.   The most dangerous demons, however, are ones that do not show any external mutation, making them physically indistinguishable from regular humans. A sudden, unexplainable personality shift may indicate cases of this.
