Suncaged Ore
Properties
Material Characteristics
Suncaged Ore forms in raw, jagged clusters, ranging in size from pebble-sized shards to basketball-sized geodes, typically embedded within scorched bedrock or fused volcanic glass. Its exterior is dull bronze to rust-colored, but fractures reveal a core of luminous orange-red crystal, pulsing faintly like a caged ember. Fine striations run through each piece, giving it the appearance of flame imprisoned within stone.
At rest, the ore glows faintly in the presence of sunlight, heat, or magic, and emits soft heat waves in pulses—as though “breathing.” When fractured or disturbed, it can burst into violent thermal reactions, causing localized explosions or releasing radiant energy in short arcs.
Physical & Chemical Properties
Suncaged Ore is extremely unstable. It holds latent solar and ley-borne energy, having been formed under immense heat and pressure. This makes it both dangerous and highly sought-after.
- When handled improperly, it can rupture with the force of a contained flame nova, burning through armor or flesh in seconds.
- When properly ritual-forged or alchemically stabilized, it can fuel enchantments, energy cells, or heat engines, or even function as a power source for magical constructs.
- Exposure to lunar light (especially from Naruun) causes the ore to dim and harden, entering a dormant state useful for safe transport.
Some shards also generate a high-pitched keening sound when exposed to ley-rich winds, leading some scholars to speculate it is resonant with solar energy, or even the cry of fire bound against its will.
Geology & Geography
Suncaged Ore can only form in extreme, violent heat zones—specifically within craters where dragonfire, magical overburn, or solar-impact phenomena have scorched the earth to the point of crystalline transmutation. These events compress desert minerals, leyline flux, and volcanic glass into an unstable but radiant lattice structure.
Origin & Source
Rumors persist that the awakening of Ashwurms, fallen solar dragons, or skybursts from Solvael contribute to new deposits. The rarest veins are said to contain cores that react to prophecy or fate, glowing only when a soul is near a destined turning point.
History & Usage
Cultural Significance and Usage
In Zola, Suncaged Ore is believed to be sunfire imprisoned by the arrogance of mortals. It is treated with reverence and fear, used only in the crafting of divine judgment tools, solar obelisks, or ritual scar-seals for exile and purification. Only women of the Sunblaze Conclave are permitted to wield it without risk of spiritual retribution.
In Durrozhonth, the ore is used in tribal forging rites, often hammered into brutal dueling weapons that detonate upon deathblow. It is also embedded in armor crests as a badge of ancestral fire, symbolizing that the wearer stands ready to ignite themselves in glorious end if legacy demands it.
Refinement
Only specially shielded miners or magical containment teams can approach raw Suncaged Ore. In Zola, harvesting is overseen by the Priesthood of Ash and Daylight, who employ ceremonial mirrored tools and lunar-cooling rituals. In Durrozhonth, ore is ripped from the crater crust by brutal quarry gangs who treat casualties as worthy losses for stronger yield.
To refine it, alchemists use a lunar quenching method, bathing the ore in moonlight while singing “cooling rites.” Others encase it in obsidian chambers or use void crystal lattices to isolate the volatility before shaping.
When smelted and tempered properly, it forms Solbind Alloy, a material used in the construction of sunblades, mana batteries, and dragonsteel runes. Even the slag is magically active, used to inscribe temporary wards or volatile runes.
Byproducts & Sideproducts
Shattered Suncaged Ore leaves behind Ashglass, a dull gray variant that retains low-grade heat resonance. Ashglass is used in durable lenses, ritual mirrors, and spell-inscribing styluses.
Some lesser veins yield Suncinder Dust, a radiant powder used in alchemical igniters, volatile dyes, or blessing circles for solar rites.
Hazards
Transporting Suncaged Ore without magical shielding or lunar dampening is highly dangerous. It is banned in most northern cities. Arcane academies only allow it in controlled vaults, and most governments forbid its storage in city centers.
Improper storage can lead to:
- Spontaneous combustion
- Solar flares that melt metal within seconds
- Short-term blindness from radiant flashes
- Unstable magical flares that rupture wards or arcane locks
Distribution
Storage
Suncaged Ore must be stored in lunar-etched stone containers, often lined with obsidian or starshale. Ideally, it should be kept beneath moonlight or in shadow-tempered vaults, far from flame, sound vibrations, or strong emotional energy. Emotional arcanists are forbidden from handling it directly, as it has been known to react to rage or passion.
