Natural Laws

In the Veiled World, natural law is shaped as much by metaphysical forces as by physical phenomena. The foundational structure of reality is a delicate interplay between elemental forces and the flow of leylines—ancient rivers of magic that pulse beneath the surface of the world like blood in a living organism. These laws govern the mechanics of gravity, magnetism, fire, and the very concept of motion itself, but they are not immutable. Magic, deeply embedded within the weave of the world, alters and refracts these natural constants in localized and often unpredictable ways.

Gravity follows predictable patterns across much of the world, but in the region of Fliandus, where floating islands drift in serene defiance of the laws of physics, gravity functions erratically. Here, objects fall more slowly the higher they rise, and directional pull can vary by island, as though each landmass has carved its own gravitational agreement with the universe. Theories suggest a rare convergence of leylines above and beneath Fliandus, where arcane, divine, and natural forces intersect and suspend the land in defiance of collapse. Researchers from Qirina and Azora continue to study this anomaly, but progress is stymied by the islands’ near-mythical elusiveness.

Magnetism and auroras are intimately tied to the arcane flows of the Veiled World. In the northern skies above Iceculus, brilliant auroras shimmer in violet, green, and indigo hues, but unlike natural auroras, these are rhythmic, pulsing in harmonic waves. This phenomenon, known as the Weavelight, is believed to be a visible manifestation of divine leylines interacting with the polar energies of the frozen north. Navigation in these regions becomes impossible with magnetic instruments, as compasses spin wildly and directional magic often falters. Only the shamans of Utril are known to successfully navigate by reading the cadence of the lights.

Fire, as an element, is influenced by the substance consumed and the magical saturation of the region. In leyline-dense regions like Accendus or parts of Qirina, fire does not burn red or orange, but blue or violet, with embers that hum with harmonic resonance. This coloration is indicative of arcane saturation; it is whispered that particularly attuned casters can read spells within the flame, as though the leyline itself is attempting to communicate. Conversely, in Yoggul—where natural magic dominates and civilization dares not settle—fire burns with green flame when fueled by flora native to the region. These flames emit no heat, only light, and are used by the native druids in rites that remain closed to the outside world.

Leylines are not evenly spread across the Veiled World. Their influence ebbs and flows, and in some regions, they intersect to form Nodes, volatile or potent points of energy. Sylvan, a land of fey-touched chaos, sits atop a fractured intersection of divine and natural leylines, causing spells cast there to behave unpredictably. Magic in Sylvan does not obey consistency or tradition—it reacts to emotion, intention, and sometimes whimsy, reshaping outcomes with fey logic. This magical instability makes Sylvan both wondrous and unnerving to outsiders.

Conversely, Lothenar lies upon a leyline null zone. The arcane weave thins significantly across the region, suppressing most forms of arcane magic entirely. Only divine magic—channeled through the lawful clerics of the Council of Sol—retains its potency. This magical suppression has deeply influenced the region’s culture, fostering a reliance on law, military, and academic rigor instead of arcane solutions.

Localized metaphysical laws further shape the world’s diversity. In Dol Gonish, where all life has mysteriously perished, a phenomenon known as the Stillness persists. Here, no wind blows, no animal stirs, and magic appears to fade shortly after it is cast. Scholars believe this to be a site where a once-powerful divine leyline was catastrophically severed, resulting in a scar upon the weave itself—a place where magic has died and entropy has taken root.

The natural laws of the Veiled World are thus not uniform. They respond to the flows of leylines, the scars of ancient wars, the will of the gods, and the presence of arcane anomalies. These laws are studied by sages, feared by travelers, and revered by those whose lives depend upon their understanding. The world itself breathes magic, and its laws are but the rhythm of that breath, ever shifting, ever shaping.
