History

The first researchers into tapping into the energy of other planes of existence operated in the Old Realm, known at the time as the Laorin Magocracy. THe first experiments produced only small devices that were notoriously unstable and accidental explosions were commonplace. The discovery and inclusion of Kavanite to stabilize the magical fields by absorbing the flare ups that had previously caused explosions provided the key needed to create devices that could be used as energy sources.
The first devices were simply used for lighting but as the technology matured larger and more intricate constructions could be made, including spider like mining robots and railbound transports for mining products.

The Ruptor Aequor

The ultimate achievement of the Plane breakers, as these researchers were now calling themselves, is the Ruptor Aequor. This orb was able to fully bring all of the elental planes together and extract almost arbitrary amounts of energy. This device was hailed as an enormous success was truly a massive piece of engineering. It utilized all of the temples, that were build using Kavanite-rich materials but were at this point abandoned, as giant field dampeners to contain the magical field within the capitol city were it was housed.
This sacriledge of the old temples caused great anger among the old gods however and led to The coming of the endless night. As the shockwave from the Starfall arrived at the city many of the old temples were destroyed which meant that the dampening field of the Aequor was weakened and lost. The field destabilized quickly and the last thing that is described by eyewitness accounts was an extremely bright light of all possible and impossible colors flashing out from the tower were it was kept.
