The coming of the endless night

The interruption of the golden age of civilization by the starfall and the subsequent coming of the Endless Night, an extended period of darkness has defined the world and lead to the rise and fall of many cultures and civilizations.

Before the Endless night

Before the coming of the Endless Night the civilizations of the world were thriving. In what is now the far north there was a vast kingdom whose prime deity was the sun god Pelor. The land was lush and fertile and the people built vast cities out of white marble transported all the way from the Spine mountain chain in the far east of their land.   Research also bloomed in this land, scientists and mages from all corners of the world gathered in the capitol of Kaiher and together they constructed many wonderful machines, intricate combinations of engineering and magic, the workings of which are now lost to time. As their prowess grew their reverence for the gods diminished and the temples became less frequented. One day one of the top Mages, Munaeth, of the realm announced that he had constructed a device that could pull limitless light and energy by using magical connections to all of the elemental planes and the focused faith of the people. His discovery was hailed as bringing the power of the sun into mortal hands and the temples to Pelor and the other deities were torn down or emptied and places of reverence for Munaeth and his invention were put in their place.   This was unacceptable not only to Pelor but to all the old gods, and they decided that mortals had grown to far in their hubris and needed reminding of what power the deities still held and how much the mortals really needed them.

The Starfall

On one faithful day the people noticed that dawn appeared to be early and they looked into the sky and they saw a new star, as bright as the full moon. Over the next two days this star brightened and turned night into brightest day and gave all two shadows when the sun was out. Panic was widespread and people flocked to the old temples to pray in a desperate attempt to stop, what they rightly saw as a punishment from the gods. This did not avail them however, and on the seventh day the light was so bright that being outside was impossible without being blinded. At what would have been midnight on the seventh day the star fell to the earth in the sea just west of the coast. The impact was so large that it created ocean and raised new mountains, now known as the Rim mountains. The resulting explosion and shockwave wiped out most of that once great nation, sending the capitol into ruins, and the remnans of its people cowering.

The coming of the Endless night

For two months after the Starfall the sky was covered with thick dustclouds, blocking out all light. When the clouds finally dispersed they revealed a dark sky full of stars with a crescent moon hanging over the lands. This was hailed as the end of the ordeal by many survivors, while others, more heavyminded, claimed that there was more to come. The people waited for dawn to break and as they waited they realized that this was indeed not the end for the sun did not rise. They watched the moon rise and set, yet the sun never came.
