Otherwordly Patron - The Great Wyrm

The Great Wyrm

Your patron is a titanous Great Wyrm, a dragon of unfathomable power and size. Living aeons, Great Wyrms have watched civilisations rise and fall like the changing of the seasons to any mortal being. Due to their long life, a Great Wyrm's plans are often confusing or nonsensical for those who interact with them, but it is likely that those that serve them are just a small piece in a millennia long plan. Examples of Great Wyrms include: Sirenis the Amethyst Seeker, Lendys the Silver Judge and Rhashaak the Black Guardian of Haka’torvhak. The power you gain will be determined by the type of Great Wyrm you make a pact with, these types are: Chromatic, Metallic or Gemstone. More examples of Great Wyrms can be found in Fizban's Treasury of Dragons.

Tongue of the Dragon

1st level Great Wyrm feature
You gain some of the majestic presence of your Great Wyrm.

  • Dragon's Speech. You can speak, read, and write Draconic.

In addition you gain one of the following based on your choice of Great Wyrm type:

  • Frightful Words. (chromatic) You channel your patron's terrifying nature and gain the ability to cast cause fear (at 1st level) a number of times equal to half your proficiency bonus (rounded down) per long rest without expelling a spell slot. You can also cast this spell using any spell slots of the appropriate level or higher you have available, and it does not count towards your number of spells known.
  • Hidden Messages. (gemstone) You gain the ability to speak telepathically to a single creature you can see up to a distance of 120 feet, provided you both share a language and the creature has an intelligence score of at least 4. In addition, the creature can respond to you telepathically.
  • Persuasive Phrases. (metallic) You channel your patron's powerful presence and gain the ability to cast charm person (at 1st level) up to a number of times equal to half your proficiency bonus (rounded down) per long rest without expelling a spell slot. You can also cast this spell using any spell slots of the appropriate level or higher you have available, and it does not count towards your number of spells known.

Scaled Defence

6th level Great Wyrm feature
You begin to take on characteristics of your patron’s type. You can choose one resistance to certain types of damage based on your patron's type.
Resistances
Chromatic cold, fire, poison, acid or lightning
Gemstone force, necrotic, psychic, radiant or thunder
Metallic cold, fire, poison, acid or lightning

In addition, when a creature deals damage to you that uses your chosen damage resistance, you can use your reaction to bolster your scaled defence to reduce the damage of that type to 0 and gain immunity to it until the start of your next turn. Once you've used this feature, you can't use it again until you finish a long rest.

Hoard Sacrifice

10th level Great Wyrm feature
Your patron shares with you part of the power of its hoard. After a short or long rest you can choose one of the following benefits by sacrificing either 50 Gold Pieces (chromatic), 500 Silver Pieces (gemstone) or 5 Platinum Pieces (metallic) to your patron's hoard, which will be magically taken by your patron.

  • Draconic Flight. You can use a bonus action to summon or dismiss spectral dragon wings which take a form befitting your patron. When the wings are summoned, you have a flying speed equal to your walking speed and you can hover for 20 minutes total before your next long rest or you take a new benefit using this feature. Taking this feature again before a long rest will continue the timer where it left off.
  • Draconic Senses. You gain blindsight out to a range of 10 feet. Within that range, you can effectively see anything that isn’t behind total cover, even if you’re blinded or in darkness. Moreover, you can see invisible creatures within that range, unless the creatures successfully hide from you.
  • Empowered Spells. Once per turn, when you deal damage with a spell you do additional damage to the creature equal to your Charisma modifier of the type you chose as your damage resistance in Scaled Defence.
If you do not have these exact amounts of currency, your patron may also accept items of equal or greater value instead. These could be magic items or treasure made from the same materials as the above currencies, e.g. a Platinum Cup, a Golden Jewellery Box or a Silver Plate. Whether an item is acceptable to your patron or not is determined by your DM.   You can only have one of these benefits enabled at a time. If you choose not to sacrifice anything to the hoard then no benefit will be bestowed upon you. Any benefit you have in play is removed after you finish a long rest unless you sacrifice the required amount to the hoard to re-enable it.

Aspect of the Wyrm

14th level Great Wyrm feature
Your patron teaches you an ability derived from its own devastating power. This ability is determined by the type of Great Wyrm you made a pact with.

  • Chromatic Flare. (chromatic) As an action you flare with elemental energy. Each creature in a 30-foot-radius sphere centered on yourself must make a Dexterity saving throw equal to your spell save DC. If it fails, it takes 10d8 damage of the type you chose as your damage resistance in the Scaled Defence feature or half as much on a success.
  • Psychic Beam. (gemstone) As an action you emit a beam of energy in a 90-foot line that is 10 feet wide. Each creature in that area must make an Intelligence saving throw equal to your spell save DC. If it fails, it takes 7d8 damage of the type you chose as your damage resistance in the Scaled Defence feature. On a success the creatures take half as much damage. In addition, immediately after you take this action you can use your bonus action to teleport to an unoccupied space you can see within 60 feet of you.
  • Shattering Roar. (metallic) As an action you unleash a magical roar. Each creature in a 30-foot-radius sphere centered on yourself must make a Constitution saving throw equal to your spell save DC. If it fails, it takes 7d8 damage of the type you chose as your damage resistance in the Scaled Defence feature and is incapacitated until the end of your next turn. On a success a creature takes half as much damage and is not incapacitated.
Once you have used this feature you must finish a long rest before you can take it again, or finish a short rest and sacrifice 1000 gold (chromatic), 10,000 silver (gemstone) or 100 platinum (metallic) to your Great Wyrm's hoard - this can be done in addition to your choice from your Hoard Sacrifice feature.
