Fraylurks

Overview:
Fraylurks are rare, serpentine creatures with a gaze that doesn’t petrify the body—but unravels the soul. Born from dense resonance fields, these beings are deeply connected to the unseen currents of the world. Their presence disturbs the balance of nearby frequencies, causing instability in both people and places.

Appearance & Behavior:

  • Fraylurks lack traditional eyes; instead, their long, smooth heads shimmer with shifting soullight that pulses in rhythmic waves.
  • Their movement is unsettling—less slithering, more like they drift or glide atop invisible strands of resonance, warping the air around them.
  • Generally docile, especially older ones, Fraylurks are not inherently aggressive. They act as guardians of places with deep, stable resonance—crystal caves, ancient ruins, or frequency wells.
  • When intruded upon, a Fraylurk will first give subtle warnings: localized resonance drops, visual distortions, or emotional dissonance.
  • If ignored or attacked, they retaliate by destabilizing the soul-frequency of intruders.

Soul Impact:
Exposure to a Fraylurk’s focused gaze can cause:

  • Mild cases: dizziness, loss of harmonization, disrupted casting.
  • Severe cases: temporary soul detachment—leading to a coma-like state and magical disconnection.
  • In extremely rare instances, this dissonance can birth a Hollowtones, a spectral being formed from the fragmented echoes of the victim’s soul.

Personality & Lifespan:

  • Fraylurks are ancient and long-lived, with a deep, instinctual sense of soul-frequency. They respond more to harmony and intent than speech or gesture.
  • Younger Fraylurks are more volatile, struggling to suppress their resonance-interference, and are far more likely to lash out.

Naming Note:
The name “Fraylurk” comes from the way they lurk in silence and fray the edges of the soul, unraveling without touch or force.
