Virtue: Self-Control
Self-Control is a trait that measures of how well your character is able to resist trials and temptations. It is also a measure of how pliable their mind is with regards to emotion-based decision making. Self-Control rolls are made whenever the character gives in to their basest passions and most cope with the problems and devastation caused by their lack of restraint. Failure on a self-control roll indicates that the character has failed to resolve to do better in the future and has accepted a certain lack of control as their new normal (i.e. permanent loss of a dot of Self-Control). These rolls may be required whenever a character enters a a rage Frenzy, suffers emotional damage from supernatural powers such as the Bewitching discipline, or succumbs to temptation that is prohibited by their path's hierarchy of sins.
Virtue Level:
0 | Uncontrolled: Your Character does whatever their bestial impulses dictate. They destroy or kill whenever the stimulus or need to do so arises. |
1 | Weak: Your Character rarely resists the urge to frenzy, you need to avoid tempting situations like being around people or objects that you covet, and instigating random fights. |
2 | Average: Your Character resists most common urges to retaliate, steal, and cut corners so long as they experience these urges in small dosages. |
3 | Disciplined: Your Character routinely faces and resists urges to retaliate even when experiencing shame or intense desire. |
4 | Temperate: Your Character is stalwart against the temptations of acting out emotionally even when utterly humiliated or offered an easy (but immoral) path to getting what their heart desires. |
5 | Self-Mastery: Your Character rarely acts on their baser impulses. It takes a herculean effort to get an emotional rise out of you and even then, the result is often subdued and calculated. |
Available Paths
- Path of Humanity: The core moral assumption of the Path of Humanity is that human life is sacred and notions of good and evil are fixed around this point. Murder, wonton destruction, and antisocial behavior are universally considered evil in this Path, while selflessness, gentleness, and a love and respect for other human beings are considered capital virtues in this Path.
- Path of Safety: The core value of the Path of Safety is utilitarianism—a moral person will do whatever it takes to safeguard that life on the deep space colonies will continue to survive and thrive. Because of this ideology, a person following the Path of Safety could justify a whole list of violent and morally questionable actions so long as they were done to ensure that the continuance of life on their colony would continue.
- Path of Harmony: The core value of the Path of Harmony is stewardship. Vampires, as rational apex predators, have an obligation to shepherd the human masses beneath them so that there will always be a ready supply of food available. This does not mean that Harmonists are completely detached from their prey. Just as a farmer would take pride in their livestock, the average Harmonist views themselves as a benevolent and necessary custodian of society.
- Path of Honorable Accord: The core value of the Path of Honorable Accord is knowing one’s place in the grand order of the cosmos. Every sentient creature in society has a rightful place, and Accordists avoid personal and societal breakdown by observing ridged hierarchies of social status. Those who find and adhere to their proper place gain honor. Those with lower stations submit to their betters, while those with power must shoulder the burden of leadership. For this reason, Accordists tend to develop a tribal mentality—common allies under a single unchallenged king.
