Abilities: Lore
The study of the supernatural world is broken up into two large fields of research: Lore which focuses on the nature and history of supernatural creatures, and the Occult which focuses on the development and use of supernatural sources of power. Lore masters analyze the secrets of other supernatural creatures, or cryptids, and assess which bits of data are mere colorful fairy tales, and which bits contain a grain or more of truth. The five major types of supernatural creatures covered with this knowledge are Vampires, Werewolves, Mages, Changelings, and Wraiths. Many lesser types of cryptid creatures also exist and the more your character delves into this field of study, the more concrete facts and esoteric theories that have have concerning all of them and their relationships with each other and the world at large. Common information rolls using the Lore knowledge include identifying a supernatural creature's strengths and weaknesses, identifying an unknown cryptid creature by sight, and knowing a few basic aspects of culture and etiquette that will keep you from offending a supernatural creature that you have just met. Study rolls involving the Lore knowledge include understanding the tribes, factions, and sects that exist within many cryptid societies, identifying the major heroes and villains that are important to a supernatural community's metanarrative, and unearthing long-lost secrets from tomes and arcane libraries.
Ability Levels:
0 | Ignorant: You do not even know the common (and mostly-false) tales concerning Vampires, Werewolves, and other supernatural creatures. You may even reject the claim that such creatures actually exist. |
1 | High School: You know the basics—Vampires dislike sunlight and fire, Werewolves can shapeshift and are allergic to silver, etc. You still have a hard time parsing which bits of data or hearsay and which facts are legit. |
2 | College: You have accumulated some first hand encounters with Cryptids to bolster your book learning. You have started to pick up on some of the specialized terms used by cryptids when they discuss their own existence and society. |
3 | Masters: The bulk of your facts about the Supernatural are grounded in reality and not myth. Some cryptid groups might consider you to be dangerous as you have learned a few secrets that weren't meant to be known by outsiders. |
4 | Doctorate: You are a legitimate danger to most Supernatural creatures, as you possess detailed knowledge about their strengths and weaknesses, and an understanding of how their worldview and culture can be used for or against them. |
5 | Scholar: You are an expert on cryptid habits and legends, possessing detailed knowledge about who's who among various supernatural societies. Other cryptids consider this level of knowledge to be dangerous if it is possessed by an outsider. |
