Melancholy is a condition that any sapient species can experience. It's marked by pronounced feelings of despair and helplessness, low motivation, sadness, and prolonged inability to feel joy. There is often a depressed mood, and many people with melancholy describe a great weight over them. It can be caused by events such as the loss of a job, loved one, or contracting another serious illness, childbirth, trauma, or it can just appear without any discernable cause. Melancholy is difficult to treat, though most people find exercise, good diet, and the ability to have connection with others to improve the symptoms. If left untreated or if self treated in a harmful way, individuals with melancholy may succumb to the illness and take their own lives. Melancholy is mostly a natural illness, but some magic effects can cause it. Some also believe that melancholy is the existential despair that arises from being able to see too much corruption in the world.
