Langdale

Redwick is the poorest barony in the realm, and has become a refugee hotspot as non-humans flee persecution in neighbouring baronies. Before moving to Dragonford, Langdale was the seat of Aster’s power, and it was one of the wealthiest cities in the realm for many years.   As an invader, Aster wanted a safe place to operate out of, and so Langdale’s walls were built high, with the seven major towers built to watch for attackers and defend the walls. 28 minor towers line the walls also.   In the last decade Redwick has become impoverished and Langdale now serves as a stark divide between the rich and the poor. The lower part of the city is a festering hive. Its streets are narrow and filled with the poor, sick, and those looking to make quick money.   The most wretched part of the city is Rag’s End. The maze-like alleys and slums of Rag's End are home to only the most desperate of Langdale’s working class as well as a host of homeless people, addicts, cripples and vagrant wanderers. Most people only get by through begging, temporary work and the charity of the churches of Iomedae and Erastil.   Much of this desolate slum is owned by the slumlord, Zie Kari, who uses The Hangmen, a local gang, as his hired muscle. Conflict with the city guard is common in Rag’s End, and many guardsmen refuse to even enter that area of the city.   The upper portion of the city is completely different. It is light, airy, and wealthy – filled with nobles and aristocrats from across the barony who have come to the city to find safety.

Government

Baron Arnald Roderick has his seat in Langdale and serves as the city’s mayor. Many of the duties that would usually be carried out by the mayor have been delegated to the Justice of the Court, Nigel Dunstan.

Defences

Langdale has a strong guardsmen presence. Most of the guards are former soldiers and take their job seriously, but as the population of the city has grown so quickly, a large number of new recruits have been taken on.   The captain of the guard, Ser Gar Jordan, was once a knight in the King’s army. He tries his best to keep crime to a minimum in the city, but there are just too many crimes being committed for him to stop or investigate them all.   Justice Dunstan was in charge of the new recruitment drive, but he gave the task to deputy justice, Duval, who has begun filling the ranks with his own men.

Geography

Langdale sits on the mouth of the Iuvenis River (pr. “You-venice meaning Young River).   There are two distinctive features of Langdale. The first is the Giant’s Causeway, a massive bridge that predates all known history. It’s thought that the causeway once stretched all the way to the Dragon Teeth Isles and maybe even beyond. But who made it or where it truly led is lost to time. The area of the city directly beneath the causeway is known as the Shadow District because it is always in the shadow of the causeway. This is one of the more dangerous areas of the city and is filled with gambling dens, brothels, and fighting pits. The other main feature of the city is the Guardian Wall, a 300 foot tall cliff that splits the city in two, separating the poorer slums and shadow district from the Marble district where the nobles and wealthier residents live. Directly beneath this cliff lies the Rubble, a district named for the vast quantity of rubble that is scattered around the base of the cliff.   Reaching 100 feet above the Guardian is the Arvensoar, a 400 foot tall tower constructed during Langdale’s golden years. It serves as a great watchtower and the barracks for the city’s guard. It houses 8 trebuchets pointing in different directions to protect the city from all angles. Only authorised people may enter the summit. You must own property in the area or have a writ from a resident of the Summit granting you access before you are allowed to ascend the Guardian or enter the Summit gates. The Baron lives in the White tower, a grand marble structure that once served as the palace of the Dragon Kings.
