Musical Instruments

Song

You may spend at least 10 minutes playing music with your instrument, though you may choose to play longer. Upon completing your song (or session of songs) you may choose to grant a Crescendo Die to a creature that listened to your song. When making an ability check, a held Crescendo Die may be spent to roll 1d4 and add the result to the check. Upon completing a Long Rest, any still held Crescendo Die is lost. You must complete a Short Rest to benefit from this feature once more, though you may of course continue to sing songs to your heart's content.

Musical Style

When using the Song feature, you may choose to utilize a Musical Style, which modifies the effects of the feature. If you wish to incorporate a Musical Style that is not available, or does not align with the listed choices, consult with the DM to create one of your own.   Anthem: Hopeful, inspiring, thematic, and memorable. Anthems are foundational and meaningful pieces to many. With this style, you know a great many anthems, for nations, guilds, and various organizations. When using your Song feature, the creature you give your Crescendo Die to may expend the die to repel fear from their heart, and eliminate the Frightened condition, as well as gaining temporary hit points equal to the result of the die roll.   Dance: This style of music is lively, catchy, and often repetitive. It is meant to illicit a physical reaction, a instinctive draw to move and be lively. When using your Song feature with this style, the creature you give your Crescendo Die to may expend it to gain 10 ft. of additional movement on their turn.   Dirge: This music is somber and mourning, used to grieve the dead, or lament a tragedy. When using your Song feature with this style, the creature you give your Crescendo Die may expend it when obtaining a death strike in order to negate the strike.   Folk: This type of music varies greatly, but is founded in a common understanding often found between rural, working class people, and uses the simpler, less expensive instruments that rural communities would be able to obtain. It is meant to reflect the beauty, grace, cruelty, and hardship that those who live off the land all have to face. When using your Song feature with this style, the creature you give your Crescendo Die to may roll a d6 if it is used as part of a Intelligence (Nature) or Wisdom (Survival) ability check.   Hymn: Music designed to revere a religion or god, with a number of distinct styles and song structures. When using your Song feature with this style, the creature you give your Crescendo Die to may roll a d6 if it is used as part of an Intelligence (Religion) or Wisdom (Insight) ability check.   Lullaby: A lullaby is soothing, comforting, and innocent. A reminder of the fundamentals of life, a letting go the weight of the world. When utilizing your Song feature with this style, the creature you give your Crescendo Die to may expend it when completing a Short Rest to roll 1d8 and gain that many hit points, or expend it when completing a Long Rest to make a DC10 Constitution saving throw and recover 1 additional level of exhaustion on a success.   Shanty: Often simple, repetitive, and lyrically catchy, shanties are designed for a group of laborers to resist the madness of tedium born from their work. When using your Song feature with this style, instead of granting a single creature a Crescendo Die, you grant all creatures currently performing a simple or tedious labor a Crescendo Die, and they may only spend that die on an ability check relating to the work they are doing. If the Crescendo Die is unspent upon the completion of the work, it is lost.
