Ottar Balkisson

Ottar is something of a sight to behold: an expansive belly teetering dexterously atop bandy legs, a balding head with ample chins, and a near ever-present smile marred by one brown tooth. From the shadowed depths of fat cheeks and bushy eyebrows, his eyes burn bright with razor-sharp intellect and curiosity.   His past is a bit of an enigma. He claims to have run a library, been a barber-surgeon (though not a good one, self-admittedly), and worked as a cook, to name but a few of his endeavors. He was also a travelling companion to Virhis, a wandering Deathspeaker Druid of Ghostfalls. Ottar claims that Virhis once saved him when a certain situation went sour, and he swore a life debt to the old druid. But Virhis made Ottar swear that debt not to him, but to the Circle of Deathspeakers. When Virhis was slain by the Wormborn he came into the service of the Deathspeaker Druid Svagnir because of this oath.   Ottar saved the life of Svagnir with his barber-surgeon skills (which are actually amazing, despite Ottar's belief in the opposite) when the druid was nearly slain by the dragon Scalding Rain. Ottar now considers his oath complete and currently seeks to discover what his purpose is now. For the time being he remains with the Storm Eaters in their quest to end the Third Wormborn Plague.   Ottar carries a pair of stout shortswords of fine dwarven craftmanship. He is also in possession of the devious and magical elven sword known as Wither Blade and an enchanted braid of Redda's hair that can grant him health and vigor. For a time Ottar wore a cursed necklace of severed baby fingers around his neck, a gift from Maeldun that he could not remove. Through a brutal intervention, the Storm Eaters were able to remove the cursed necklace from Ottar, but in the process one of the rogue's eyes became damaged, and now is perpetually tainted with pus and blood.   Ottar met his end in the Storm Eater's battle at the god gash of Valdryssil. The ever-surprising scoundrel willingly sacrificed himself so that his body could be the vessel for Nydaugg's soul. Svagnir then cast Ottar's body into the god gash, replenishing Valdryssil with the power within Nydaugg's primordial soul. One wouldn't think "hero" would be a word to describe Ottar Balkisson, but in the end, that is what he was. A true hero.
