Fucknar Stormgrin

Fucknar was born a thrall (his mother being captured in a raid before his birth) to a Huscarl of Hafrsted, destined for a short life of dull and grueling servitude. But destiny is what you make of it, especially for someone as clever as Fucknar.   When Fucknar was about ten winters old his master became mortally ill, but a quick-thinking Fucknar saved the Huscarl's life by using his self-taught knowledge of certain medicinal herbs that grew wild near Hafrsted. Grateful to the clever and loyal lad, the Huscarl granted Fucknar not only his freedom, but apprenticed him to a local apothecary to nuture his natural talent for herbalism. Within just a few short years Fucknar's quick mind learned everything the apothecary had to teach, and word spread in certain circles that that lad was truly gifted. And by certain circles I mean the 5th Circle of the Lodge Eldritch, know as The Travelers, mages tasked to wander Valkheim seeking arcane knowledge, artifacts, and talent.   The Thirteen year old Fucknar was recruited into the Lodge Eldritch by a wandering mage of the 5th Circle known as Einar the Windy, who took him as a second apprentice. Einar mentored Fucknar in the ways of magic and the arcane, lessons which Fucknar gobbled up like a tomte devours cheese. Einar, Fucknar, and Einar's first apprentice (a pompous young mage called Olav Farwalker) wandered the wastes north of Hafrsted for years searching for magical knowledge and treasure, all the while completing the arcane education of the two apprentices. Fucknar proved to be the superior student and soon outpaced Olav in magical skill (a point which the arrogant Olav could barely stomach, despite his ample waistline).   Eventually Fucknar and Olav completed their apprenticeships and struck out on their own as full-fledged Lodge mages of the 5th Circle. Einar went south to investigate rumors of a powerful magical sword lost somewhere in Coldlight Fjord. Olav acquired a small longship (which he named the Impertinent Serpent) and set out to explore rumors involving strange necromancy possibly causing the folk of the Axe Breaker Isles to vanish. Fucknar struck out on his own to the far north, hoping to find clues to the location of Svain's Tower in the frozen marshes known as The Melt. Fucknar spent the next few years scouring The Melt. He often hired the services of a talented tomte scout named Obi in his wanderings across the trackless frozen marshes, and the two became fast friends. Fucknar also became a trusted ally of the River Men of the Melt, savage nomads who survive in that frozen wasteland, using his magical skills and knowledge of herbalism to gain the barbarians' respect whenever he encountered them in his wanderings. The Rivermen gave Fucknar the title of Hridgren, or Stormgrin in their primitive tongue, as the young mage always had a smile on his face, even during the worst and most trying to times. There are rumors that Fucknar took several wives in the years he spent among the River Men, and sired a handful of children.   When the Third Wormborn Plague began Fucknar was tasked by the Lodge Eldritch to go north to the very trunk of Valdryssil itself and secure an important anomaly in the Tree known as the God Gash. When Fucknar reached Valdryssil he discovered that Hrolf of the Traitors Three, along with thousands of wormborn, had already secured the God Gash for themselves and were building a fortress made of ice around it. When Fucknar reported his findings to the Lodge, they sent him reinforcements in order to find a way to reach the God Gash through the wormborn masses. He was joined by others of his Circle, to include his old fellow apprentice Olav Farwalker and the mighty Jhurlik Bluecloak, master of the 5th Circle himself! Whatever the Lodge wanted with this God Gash must have been of dire importance if Jhurlik was involved.   Jhurlik, Fucknar, and the other mages established a hidden basecamp near Valdryssil while they sought to find a way to reach the God Gash. On one fateful day Master Jhurlik (at the suggestion of his trusted, long-time/part-time ally, a wandering skald who boldly went by the name of Skald) teleported back to the Lodge to report their progress, and left Fucknar in charge while he was away. But not a moment after Jhurlik departed a group of adventurers known as the Storm Eaters suddenly appeared through the teleportation circle Jhurlik had used to depart. The adventurers then damaged the teleportation circle, as if they feared to be followed by others from the Lodge. Fucknar immediately knew something terrible was afoot and attempted to stop the adventurers. It would be the last decision the talented young mage would make. Fucknar was slain by the Storm Eaters, who were aided by Olav when the pompous mage betrayed Fucknar and the Lodge. Fucknar's remains where left to rot without death rites on the glacier that surrounds the trunk of Valdryssil.
