Anurid

You can trust anurid. Money doesn't drive them. Curiosity does.
— Thyichar

Anurid are drawn to the open air, whether it's a swampy marsh, the leaky deck of a log raft, or a lush jungle teeming with life. Anurid and buffonids are believed to have shared a common ancestor, but they diverged long ago and evolved independently. Anurid, meanwhile, moved into the trees, but their amphibious nature kept them near water and at some point ethnic groups split off and returned to the water once more. As a species, anurid resemble humanoid bipedal frogs. Anurid's skin comes in a wide range of colors, depending on their subtypes. The back and head of quagbred anurid are usually green, with small black or brown spots, while their chests and abdomens are lighter green or brown. Mersculler males have blue skin with large black patches on their back and head, along with light grey chests and abdomens; females of this subtype have green skin that ranges from emerald to olive in tone. As the name suggests, crypsis anurid have the widest range of coloration. Their skin is often brilliantly tinted in crimson or orange or yellow. The patches of color form nearly symmetrical patterns on their head and back, while their chest and abdomen are a uniform color.   Practical and form-fitting, anurid fashion is designed to not interfere with quickness and accuracy. To keep small items and prized trinkets close at hand, they prefer pockets, belt pouches, and bandoliers.   Anurid are, on the whole, positive people. In their daily lives, they enjoy friendly competition, often turning their chores into games and rewarding the best or fastest member with small prizes such as carved wooden animals, colorful stones, or pretty bits of eroded glass, among other things.   The anurid tribes are known for their work ethic. Although children who do not show aptitude for their parents' craft are not forced into it, they are taught other trades by other families until they find one that suits them.   Anurid are not territorial; they enjoy interacting with other tribes and sharing prime camping locations where tales can be told over meals with other tribes. Anurid who come into contact with each other will spend up to a week competing in athletic events, eating, telling stories, and generally having a good time. Sometimes, these impromptu celebrations spur young anurid to leave their birth tribes and form a new one under the leadership of an older woman.   Traveling in small family-oriented tribes of 25 to 40 individuals, the anurid rarely stay in one place for more than a season before moving on to see what awaits them in the future. Because portability is so important to them, they don't bring anything that can't be carried on their backs. Anurid have a reputation for being friendly, and in fact, they are generally honest and respectful to those they encounter.   Quagbred encampments consist of low wigwams made of woven marsh grasses laid over a frame of light but sturdy wooden poles. Each residence can comfortably accommodate up to eight anurid, or three times that number in an emergency.   Merscullers are always on the move, plying rivers and lakes to transport trade goods. Many times, entire tribes of the frog-like folk will guide trains of barges and rafts and canoes upstream and downstream. They prefer to sleep outside on their watercraft or in the soft grass or sand along the riverbank despite bad weather conditions.   Crypsis habitats are hot, humid climates where they build temporary treetop villages out of the living canopy and cured reptile skins they catch. In areas where predators are particularly vicious, crypsi join forces with other tribes to eliminate the threat.   Nomads by nature, anurid have a natural desire to travel. Newly formed tribes often travel far and wide in order to expand their knowledge of the world. Occasionally, a young anurid is unable to find a role that fits her talents and personality. When this happens, the youngster often leaves her tribe and adopts a new way of life. As a rule, Anurid adventurers tend to maintain their wanderlust and rarely spend more than a few nights in one place.

Naming Traditions

Anurid are given a name by their parents when they transition from tadpods to twuri, which are the young anurid. Although different anurid with the same name stress different syllables, each version sounds distinct, anurid favor the names of famous heroes and legendary figures for their young. Anurid derive their family names from prominent physical characteristics they display in their daily lives.   Family names can change dramatically over time, and anurid matriarchs who break off to form a new tribe will often change their family name completely. If they decide to depart from the ways of their people, Anurid often drop their family name and go by their given name.   Male Names: Bors, Jome, Kappo, Krebbit, Pol, Reb, Ropo, Trev, Wakka
