Blacksight contract

The so-called Blacksight contract is a special bounty contract issued by the notorious Seventh Seal crime syndicate. Whilst technically illegal and spread in secrecy, the power and importance of the syndicate make every issue of such a contract big news that everyone knows about, yet pretends not to.   The Blacksight contract is only issued on the most dangerous and difficult to hunt down enemies of the syndicate and offers miraculously high bounties in return. This promise of great fortune attracts a large number of bounty hunters, adventurers and people who have fallen on hard times or seek to become more powerful and wealthy on top of their already impressive resources. Despite the supposed secrecy, society seems to begin almost vibrating as if seated on an anthill every time a Blacksight contract is issued and spread in the underground as the movements of people across the realms shift, creating a new random movement pattern on top of the regular routes as an impressive number of people find excuses to travel to places they've never been to before in search of the person whose lifeless body is going to make them rich and influential. Even city guards, soldiers and the aristocracy, despite being tasked with fighting the crime lords, often secretly partake in these hunts themselves in a quest to get rich, selfishly and often ignorantly gaining the syndicate a stronger foothold in society by strengthening their already impressive influence over the soldiery and nobility.   The Blacksight seems to have a remarkably powerful effect on society. Some argue that it is mere greed, others, however, claim that the black sight stated in the contract denotes the darkening of people's own vision - making the contract a powerful magical curse by which society itself is being turned into a wolf pack, hunting its prey with very sudden and often severe determination. Whether this is true, however, is unknown, but seeing the almost otherworldly effect these bounties have on society, it remains a valid, if unproven, theory to consider.   The numerous greedy and desperate hunters cause significant damage wherever they pass - often stealing, looting or harassing people on the way, getting lost and dying due to a lack of familiarity with the country and a nomadic lifestyle on the road or killing their competitors when they happen to meet them chasing down the same lead or believing to be doing so.   The Blacksight contract is completed when someone drops off the hunted person's body at one of the designated places along with a physical Blacksight contract, where a Seventh Seal agent receives them and confirms the kill. The hunter is then asked to leave and wait for his reward and is paid the bounty in a few days' time, unless he gets killed by other hunters, although the danger is much smaller after the body is dropped off - with the contract completed, society always seems to sober up and somewhat recover from its murderous catharsis. Most people recover from the condition quickly and without any repercussions, usually just with a mild sense of disassociation, as if the whole event was merely a distant, hazy dream, whilst some suffer anywhere between mild amnesia to dementia and there always appear to be at least a few people who have completely lost their minds or seem like they are still under the contract's effects and never return back to their original state.   Whilst many have tried to investigate these mysterious effects and often blame them on the syndicate' black magic usage, nobody has gotten far enough in their investigation to prove anything without vanishing or giving up their search after finding themselves at one dead end after another. The Seventh Seal remains the most insidious, dangerous and powerful of the Continent's criminal organizations and the Blacksight is a terrifying showing of just how much power do the shadows have over those who walk in the sunlight.
