The Faith of the Rivers, Tavu Menai, Motek, 14th, 2995
The Faith of the Rivers is the religion practiced by most who live in the River Coast.
Mythology & Lore
The Faith of the Rivers believes that the world came to be when the River Goddess, Baikwata, extended her great arms into the earth god Tubaip. This created the great rivers of Baiku and Kwob. The race of men came out of these rivers, praising Baikwata for her rivers. However, the race of men became cold at night. Tubaip gave them fire. The fire gave the men warmth, so many praised it. Baikwata became jealous of Tubaip, plotting revenge.
The Faith of the Rivers also believes that when they die, they should be buried in the bottom of a river. This is because they believe that those buried in rivers become the fish known as Krei fish, a striped blue and white fish that is seen as sacred.
The Faith also has a myth known as, "The Crossroads of Rivers" where gods from other religions cross over from the stars into this world and become an ally of either the Earth God or the River Goddess.
Divine Origins
This religion was started in the year 41 of the Red Kingdoms Era. Its origins start farther than that with a pagan belief system making up the base of the original religion, and then built atop that. The Faith started building the temples to worship Baikwata and Tubaip. The Kingdom of Emtu later incorporated the religion into itself. This meant that when conquering the rest of the River Coast, the different religions of the Red Kingdoms Era were incorporated into the Faith and allowed to become sects that worship Baikwata and/or Tubaip.
Cosmological Views
The world was created when the River Goddess Baikwata layed down onto the Earth God Tubaip, who's body is the world.
Worship
Worship in the Faith of the Rivers is done in two ways:
1. A pilgrimage to the Nine River Temples. This is done by those who wish to become priests or preachers.
2. Go to your local temple on an Aksai, and listen to a sermon done by a priest or preacher.
These are the most common ways to worship Baikwata and Tubaip. However, the three sects have their own forms of worship each. The Sect of Two Rivers often feeds Krei Fish when they find them in the river. The Faith in the Mountains mines a rock and places it on a pedestal, worshiping it on that holy day as a part of the Earth God. Finally, the Sect of Fire, Water and Earth lights a flammable rock known as Flamestone on fire and leaves it like that submerged in water, creating steam that the Sect breath in and out.
Priesthood
Priesthood is very complex to get into. In order for you to be ordained and become a priest you must
- Be ordained by another priest
- Already be a practicing preacher
Sects
There are three main sects of the Faith of the Rivers. The first is known as The Sect of Two Rivers primarily worships the River Goddess Baikwata. They have a very river oriented belief system, mostly giving sermons about the River Goddess. This sect is found along the Baiku and Kwob Rivers. The second is called the Faith in the Mountains, worshiping the Earth God Tubaip. They still worship the River Goddess to some degree, but mostly worship the Earth God. This sect gives sermons about fire and earth. They are found in the Kopi Mountains. The third is the largest, being called the Sect of Fire, Water and Earth worshiping both the River Goddess and the Earth God. They give sermons of water, fire, and earth. They are the most common, found everywhere not inhabited by the previous two sects.
