Located beyond The Gate of the Horizon that guards the entrance to midnights crown, Dawnbreach is the first settlement before travelers reach the capital city of Moonstone. The path leading to Dawnbreach is subterranean, however the settlement itself has holes in the cave ceiling, allowing light in for new travelers.
The town acts as the first line of defense for Midnight's Crown, as well as place to process those who wish to visit the underdark realm. The settlement is walled off on both ends of the tunnel for maximum fortification. Those who are applying to enter midnights crown are only permitted to enter a small portion of the Dawnbreach, an enclosed area that acts as an airlock between the two realms.
The Pen
This enclosed 'airlock' area contains a barracks, a few merchants carrying essential supplies for those who have inadvertently made lengthy trips, and The Dawnbreach Processing Bureau. In the bureau, applications to enter Midnight's Crown are taken, a process which takes several weeks and cost 500Gp per person. The process is intended to be convoluted in order to dissuade most applicants.
Dawnbreach Proper
The bulk of Dawnbreach consists of the usual residential areas, pubs, inns, a modest chapel devoted to the Goddess Lolth, and a significant amount of merchants geared towards tourists. Towards the back of the settlement is Bilbshold, a moderate castle-like fortification guarding the exit towards Moonstone. Hear resides a member of the Onyx Monarchy whom oversees the settlement. Final checks are made here before travelers are permitted to pass.
Additional Points of interest:
Royalty in charge
Ayzeal Nocturne is the 'Emir' (A Midnight's Crown Royal Family member) in charge of Dawnbreach. Ever vigilant in his role as the first line of defence for Midnight's Crown, he is a very serious, if isolated, member of the Royal Family.
The Bilbshold
The fortress located at the 'rear' of Dawnbreach, serving as the final checkpoint to those entering Midnight's Crown. It holds the lion's share of the guards as well as the royalty and polititians of the settlement. Patrols from inside Midnight's Crown also stop here, the fortress serving as a checkpoint to remain connected to the other cities. It's position within the cave creates an effective chokepoint, where attackers would struggle to effectively assault the Bilbshold's thick stone walls.
